OF?
3B?
P?

OF:  Mays - lots of fly balls in the spacious Polo Grounds followed by Candlestick (with the wind knocking batted balls that otherwise would have been HRs).  Which leads us to the following:  Yes, Mays would have outhomered Aaron had Mays played in Atlanta and Aaron in SF.  Sorry about getting off-track, Bob.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 07-04-2026

Yes Mays. Never off track talking about the Say Hey Kid

As to the pitcher. We all saw him pitch many times. Eric Gregg loved him

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 07-04-2026

Greg Maddux?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 07-04-2026

Yes Maddux. You remember that World Series Game. Outside strike one outside strike two

I wonder how MLB would have handled Gregg had he been an umpire with ABS watching every call he made.

In the run up to the All Star game, name the players who have played in more all star games than the number of seasons they played. . . .

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 07-10-2026

Willie Mays - and probably a few others from the early '60s when there were 2 All-Star games per season for a couple years.

There were a number of years in the early 60’s when multiple all-star games were held.  Therefore, I’ll guess Mays, Aaron, Mantle and Clemente.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 07-10-2026

Aaron, Clemente, Mantle??

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 07-11-2026

Aaron, Mays, Mantle, Clemente, Ernie Banks, Musial, Ted Williams, Brooks Robinson, Al Kaline, Yogi Berra, Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox

Great guesses and yes, there were two all star games in the early sixties and maybe late 50's

Heard the discussion on sports talk, and they thought only Aaron, with Mays being equal years and appearances, but according to Claude:

Hank Aaron — 25 All-Star selections in 23 seasons (1954–76, no missed years; the extra games came purely from the 1959–62 doubleheader era).
Willie Mays — 24 selections in 22 seasons played (missed 1953 for military service).
Stan Musial — 24 selections in 22 seasons played (missed 1945 for military service).
Mickey Mantle — 20 selections in 18 seasons (1951–68, no missed years).

An add on from the same sports talk conversation, who hit the first home run in an All Star game?

You got me beat, because I was thinking the MLB Home Run Derby, which only goes back to 1985.

Darrell Evans
