Name the HOF pitcher, one of whose whose trademark characteristics in home starts was a deliberately dramatic and theatrical entrance at the beginning of a game. He would complete his warm ups in deep center field, then stride slowly and purposefully across the field to the pitcher's mouns, clothed in a linen duster from neck to knees, all eyes upon him.

I cheated but Walter “Duster”
Mails not in the Hall of Fame. There goes my guess

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Genuine Realist - 07-31-2026

Everyone on this line can blow me away in sports trivia, but I came across this factoid in general reading. A pitching legend beginning a game in this hyper dramatic way was an absolutely arresting spectacle, so much so that I thought I'd share it with the board. I looked for an old newsreel of the entrance, which gives some hint to the era I'm discussing, but no one ever filmed it.

Duster was born in San Quentin, CA. He played for Sacto, Seattle, Portland, the Seals and the Oaks in the old PCL, mainly. Parts of seven seasons in the bigs, had one good year as a starter, 14-8

Interesting, but I was referencing a garment, a duster, a linen garment that drivers of early motorcars used to protect themselves from the dust and debris of the open road. Another hint.

Mails win 200 plus games in the minors. Then worked for the Seals and early SF Giants

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 08-01-2026

Okay, so that's just flat out weird. The only two pitchers I knew who might have been that eccentric were Rube Waddell and Bobo Newsom

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Genuine Realist - 08-01-2026

This guy was about as far from Waddell as it's possible to get, but he did have a flair for the dramatic.

Christy Mathewson.

Interesting guy, Christy Mathewson. Lived in a duplex on 85th in NYC when he played for the Giants next door to John McGraw, his manager. Very religious, didn't play on Sundays. Played baseball, basketball and football at Bucknell. Made Walter Camp's All-American football team in 1900 as a "12th man" because he was a terrific drop kicker.

Walter Camp named 1st, 2nd and 3rd team All American collegiate football teams starting in 1890. When did a Stanford player first make his All-American team, and who was it? And who was Stanford's first All-American football player on any major list? Who was the last Stanford player to make the Walter Camp All-American team?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 08-02-2026

I’ll go Ernie Nevers

Ernie Nevers was both the first Stanford player to make a Walter Camp All America team (2nd team selection, 1923) and the first Stanford player to make a Walter Camp 1st team All America (1925). Jim Lawson was the first consensus All American player at Stanford (1924), but Walter Camp personally demoted him from WC1TAA to the second team.

Stanford's first 1st team All American was Dudley DeGroot, who made Athletic World's 1st Team All America list in 1922.

The last Stanford player to make a Walter Camp All American football team list was Bryce Love, who made the WC 1st Team in 2017.

Name the six major league players who have pitched two no-hitters in the same season.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 08-08-2026

Virgil Trucks
Johnny Vandemeer

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 08-08-2026

Scherzer and Halladay did it. I don't know about anyone else.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 08-08-2026

Allie Reynolds.

All correct!

Virgil Trucks, Tigers, 1952
Johnny Vander Meer, Reds, 1938
Max Scherzer, Nationals, 2015
Roy Halladay, Phillies, 2010 (includes a post-season game)
Allie Reynolds, Yankees, 1951

There's one more name on this list....

Nolan Ryan has the most no- hitters. Not sure if he ever had 2 in a season, but he's my guess.

I think Koufax has the second most, but never had two in one year.

Nolan Ryan is correct! He had two no-hitters for the Angels in 1973.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 08-09-2026

Which NFL player has been on the most rosters, of the most different teams (whether or not he has played in a game)? There's a kinda-sorta Stanford and 49er connection.

Which NFL player holds the record for playing for the most professional American football franchises? (Hint: He also played for seven professional basketball teams and holds the record for most professional franchises played for in North America).
