Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - FarmBoy - 09-18-2016

Hey, WIlner moved us up! Two spots to number 11. ND falls off his rankings completely.

At this point, our SOS is taking a hit with the losses by ND and 'SC not looking good. I won't be surprised if many of the of the pollsters take this line of thinking when ranking Stanford. Hopefully KSU wins the B12 and ND wins the rest of its games.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - StanfordMatt - 09-18-2016

No reason to root for ND. Any marginal value that them winning does to our strength of schedule is heavily outweighed by the threat that they pose to our recruiting when they're doing well. Plus, the thought of rooting for the Irish just makes me feel dirty.

At this point, the Big 12 is going to have a very hard time getting a team into the playoffs. A 1-loss PAC-12 champ should have no issue making the playoff. Just take care of our business and savor the collapses of ND, SC and the Ducks.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - stupac2 - 09-18-2016

If last year proved anything it's that SOS only matters as a tiebreaker, and we already have the Pac-12 CG to do that over a bunch of teams. There's no reason to root for anyone in particular because it's so unlikely to matter. I can't bring myself to root for ND under any circumstances, ymmv.

You're not kidding.  Baylor's tops at #15 in the recently released coach's poll.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - FarmBoy - 09-18-2016

What about an undefeated Houston vs. a 1 or 2 loss Pac12 Champ?

I don't think it's out of the question for a "tiebreaker" to come into play.

Yes, that seems like the scenario to worry about.  I'd bet Houston will lose a game somewhere along the line, but it's far from certain.  And if they go undefeated, they're almost certain to make the playoff.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - Durty Nelly - 09-18-2016

The Oklahoma win  for Houston may not be that impressive unless Oklahoma wins out.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - FarmBoy - 09-18-2016

A lot of football left, clearly. I just want any edge for this Stanford team as possible. Sure, there is always a risk of ND success taking our recruits, but that's a systemic risk that we can't avoid nor control. The reason they're a great rival on our schedule is exactly because of the strength of their program. If they're a bottom dweller, then there's no value in having them as our cornerstone non-conference game. We have to find ways to have success on and off the field against a quality ND. If we don't beat them, I want them to win enough to keep them out of the playoff, but beyond that, I don't mind their success.

I see Houston has to play Louisville and @Memphis, so some tough games still remain. FWIW, ESPN is forecasting they have a 2.7% chance of winning out.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - thunder_chik - 09-18-2016

So, let's control our own destiny by winning all our games! ;)

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - fullmetal - 09-18-2016

Louisville is the team we have to worry about.  Houston upset an OU team that just lost to Ohio St.  Louisville was the buzzsaw that carved up the then-#2 FSU hype train into tiny bits with a Bama-style beating.  Louisville will probably chew up Houston with that Heis.man candidate Lamar Jackson.  But first, they have to get past Marshall next week, and then after that, Clemson.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - dabigv13 - 09-18-2016

The ACC is a garbage conference. Once everyone remembers that again, a lot of the problems with a 4 team playoff fade away.

Every contender from the Big 12 already has a loss. That means we don't care about anyone except maybe Houston but they're not going to win out so it's fine. We don't really need to root for anything except general chaos (except for us) because chaos is fun.

The former would be nice. The latter, not so much.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - StanfordMatt - 09-18-2016

FarmBoy, I understand your point and don't mean to completely discount. I just think that the chances of us being ranked either #4 or #5 at the end of the year and being judged against a Group of 5 team like Houston for the final playoff spot is very small. The chances that ND winning an extra game or two would somehow tip the scales in our direction in that scenario is even smaller.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - washingtonismoney - 09-18-2016

There's little good that can be accomplished by N.D. winning the rest of its games. N.D. being an embarrassment is very good for Stanford.

Fixed that for you.

It's back!!!!!!!

That has been one of my favourite sites for a long time, then it disappeared for awhile.

[Maybe this was the site that BC was complaining had turned into an advertisement for a Japanese medical malpractice firm - though I may have the wrong site for that.]

Back to much interesting data analysis without having to do all the work myself.

Re: Stanford-SC Game Thread - BostonCard - 09-18-2016

Yeah, things are looking up for the Pac-12 making the playoffs.  Right now the Big12 is on the outside looking in, since all their contenders have lost, they will beat each other up, and they don't have a playoff.  Houston will have to come up against Louisville.  In the unlikely event that they win, they probably deserve to be in the playoffs, but it would be tough to take the ACC seriously unless Clemson runs the table.
