The good news is that unless Thomas decides to go pro, both he and Phillips should be back next year.

Jackson, listed at 261, needs some weight as well as nous.

A bad season this year doesn't necessarily mean that our NFL-eligible stars will stay for another year. I think the tape will show their potential regardless of whether the rest of the team is performing sufficiently. But we can always dream :)

I think the idea is more "unfinished business" than "we suck so much we killed their draft stock", but it's kind of pointless to speculate.

I don't quite know what you mean by that, and I certainly don't know MaCaffrey's inner thoughts on whether to go pro now or later - but I would think a relevant question would be the shape the team is in for next year. And overall, that would appear to be pretty good. It would seem we would have many injured players back healthy, we lose very little to graduation, and we'll be on the odd-year upswing.

Might he view his injury this year though as a reason to make hay while the sun is shining?

Yeah, plenty of stories of players who hurt their draft stock in their 4th/5th year. Going to be his decision.

I'd be shocked if McCaffrey doesn't go pro. And I wouldn't be shocked if both Phillips and Thomas join him.

Yes, Ed has hinted that on multiple occasions. But I am not ruling out completely the chance of Christian coming back. I think he hinted at the possibility in one of his tweets. (wishful thinking...)

Do you know any of them well enough to be shocked by any decision?
McCaffrey seems most likely to turn pro. The evidence here is his father has made some comments that imply he would be suggesting that to his son. It's not much to go on, but it's something.
Thomas I have heard nothing that allows me to have any opinion.
I don't think Phillips would be drafted at the current time. That wouldn't necessarily stop him from trying, but I don't think Stanford has ever had a junior declare for the draft then not get drafted.

Tom Keiser left and didn't get drafted. Certainly, of late, third-year juniors (Hooper, Carter) haven't shown any qualms about leaving early.
Anyway, McCaffrey is based on performance and the aging curving of running backs. Purely financially, he'd be foolish to sign up for another 300 hits at no pay in 2017. Of course the decision isn't made purely financially, but that and Ed's comments lead me to believe he's much more likely to go pro than not.
Thomas I have no sense of personally; based purely on his performance.
As for Phillips, I recall an interview of his in the summer with a Nebraska outlet in which he stated his ambition was to leave after three years. Perhaps his performance this year will change those thoughts. Then again, perhaps not.
Re: Colorado game thread -

Keiser had some extenuating circumstances. But point taken.

Keiser left after his senior year, though he had a year of eligibility left.
[Don't know if he graduated.] Some others have done so as well, more recently Terrence Brown.
In modern times, I think three Stanford Juniors have left for the NFL. Each of them played their frosh year and each got drafted 3rd round or better. Peat and Carter after the 2014 season and Hooper after 2015. In the draft: Peat #13 (1st round), Carter #80 (3rd round), Hooper #81 (3rd round).

Can somebody provide a link to the article in which Phillips apparently suggested he would leave after three years?

Did anyone claim that he said that? So far I've only seen people saying that Ed McCaffrey made comments that implied that Christian would go after 3 years, which I recall seeing too. However, Christian himself has definitely said something that implied he would stay for 4 years. Who know how much stock to put in any of it, though?
I'd personally be pretty surprised if Phillips went, since he's put relatively little on film. He's quite important to us, but it's not clear if that's because he's NFL-good or the lack of other DL contributors. Thomas is not quite the same deal since he'll at least be all-Pac-12, but supposedly he doesn't quite project well to the NFL DL and could use more weight. He could probably go either way.

Terrence Brown is on the UW coaching staff, helping out with the secondary as a graduate assistant.

Not sure how many other recent grads have gone into coaching, but I think there are a few out there.

Unless CMac turns things around, I think this season has hurt his draft stock. After last season he looked like a 1st round pick. Now, I doubt it. If he thinks he can show better next year, it could be the smart financial decision to stay.

Not meaning to make a big deal of it, but yes. From three or four posts ago:

It was a radio interview that I can't readily find at the moment. I suppose I could hunt around for it, but he sounded like -- positively! -- a very driven guy. No problem with that, but in forecasting I think you can't discount ambitious people's pursuits.

Do you happen to remember when he said this?
A statement at the start of the year would more likely be closer to current truth than one made as he was preparing to head off to Stanford - and would factor in things like having played only a little bit freshman year and losing his entire sophomore year to injury.
