RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-27-2023

Stanford has moved up into a tie for 14th with about 9 holes remaining for the wave 2 teams. That's important because the top 15 teams will play in the morning tomorrow. The other teams will play in the afternoon when the golf course generally plays harder.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 05-27-2023

We somehow manage to move up to 13th and will start at 8am tomorrow. Fingers crossed we can move up and little and get within solid striking distance of a top 8 finish on monday

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - terry - 05-28-2023

After two rounds, Stanford is tied for 13th with Georgia and BYU at +16. Stanford has put itself in a position to make the top 15 cut. But Stanford is 5 strokes behind 8th place, so there is some work to do to qualify for match play.

Here's one thing to keep in mind -- BYU has already played the third round. To accommodate BYU's rule against competing on Sunday, the NCAA allowed BYU to play the third round on Thursday. BYU scored a poor 303, 23 over par. So BYU's score at the end of three rounds will be +39, which should put them out of contention for the top 15 cut.

I hope the golf gods finally smile on Thor.  We really need him to finally play the kind of round he is capable of while everyone sort of holds on

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - M T - 05-28-2023

At this moment, through 10-13 holes, Stanford is T9 at -4 for the day, one stroke out of 8th and 2 strokes out of 7th.

Go Card!
------------

It seems Stanford has woken up. Currently at 6th with -8 on the day (+8 overall), holes 14-17, 5 strokes ahead of 9th.

Oh, but I see there's a lot of golf to be played. Texas is at holes 0-1, 8 strokes out of top 15.

I really wish they wouldn't play like this.  Too worrisome.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-28-2023

Stanford posted 274 (-6), the 3rd best score by any team all week. They are now in 6th place, well in contention for the top 8 after tomorrow's round and advancing to match play.

They did it with solid play from top to bottom. Barclay Brown is playing perhaps the best of his Stanford career. He shot 67 (-3) and sits in 3rd place in the individual competition. Karl Vilips is playing steadier than he ever has too. He had a history of blowing up on a hole or two, then taking a few more holes to recover. Today he made 16 pars, 1 birdie and 1 bogey for even par 70. Michael Thorbjornsen recovered from 2 of his worst rounds as a Stanford Cardinal with a 68 (-2). He bogeyed the 18th but that was soooo much better than his 10 yesterday. Ethan Ng had a great round going until he double bogeyed the 16th hole. He still posted 69 (-1), his first round under par this week. Nate Menon is still trying to get his footing on this course. He shot 74 (+4) which did not count.

There is some separation as of now between the top 5 and teams 6 through 12. Stanford is in a group of about 7 teams that will be competing for the final 3 spots tomorrow. It's interesting to me that the top 12 includes no teams from the Big 12. Defending national champ Texas is in 21st. Oklahoma which has won and finished runner up within the last 5 years is in 13th. 5th ranked Texas Tech is further back. Perennial power Oklahoma State did not even make the tournament.

5. Georgia Tech +2

6. Stanford +10
7. Arizona State +11
8. Florida State +13
8. Vanderbilt +13
10. Virginia +14
11. Auburn +16
12. Texas A&M +17

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-28-2023

Stanford will play tomorrow with Georgia Tech and North Carolina but tee times won't be finalized until there is a playoff for 15th place between Ohio State and Texas Tech. They ran out of daylight today so the playoff will commence at 8 am tomorrow. My guess is that Stanford will tee off around 11 am.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 05-28-2023

This was the round Stanford needed on a big moving day. Still need to go out and play well tomorrow to lock up a spot in match play.

Getting more solid play from Brown & Vilips has been critical, especially given how poorly Thor played over the first two days and not getting much if any help from Menon. Ng has proven to be a reliable player on the roster and I expect more from him next season.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - terry - 05-29-2023

Ohio St. defeated Texas Tech in the playoff for the 15th spot in the field. So the Big 12 got completely shut out of the top 15. By conference, the top 15 includes:

6 SEC
4 ACC
2 Pac 12
2 Big 10
1 West Coast Conf.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2023

Interesting dynamic among the teams that are likely fighting for the last few spots in the top 8.

Stanford will be starting on the front 9 and playing with Georgia Tech and North Carolina, which are 8 and 9 shots ahead of them.

The other teams that are clustered closely behind Stanford - ASU, Florida St, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Auburn, Texas A&M - will be paired together and starting on the back 9.

Stanford players will have no idea where they stand as a team as they play their round unless they are checking Golfstat or getting reports from coaches or fans. There are no on-course scoreboards as far as I know. But the other teams also won't be able to get a read on where Stanford stands because the Cardinal will be playing on the other side of the golf course. I am sure that the coaches are emphasizing the importance of playing against the course, not the leaderboard. Still, I can imagine the great temptation to want to know the standings.

Stanford also will be finishing on the dangerous 18th hole, a long par 4 with water abutting the green which slopes left to right toward the water. Stanford has 3 double bogeys and a sextuple bogey 10 on that hole through 3 rounds (though they played it nearly perfectly yesterday with 4 pars and a bogey).

Off to a decent if not good start, but Thor is proving he cannot stand prosperity.  Turn - 2 into +1 in a single hole.

Doh! It's the easiest hole on the golf course too.

Golf Channel coverage begins at 2 pm pacific with live look-ins beginning at 1 pm on College Central. The broadcast today will focus on the individual race so we could see a lot of Barclay Brown who is in 2nd.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - PVTree - 05-29-2023

We are cougging it so far. We're on the outside looking in from 9th place. W need a strong finish to get back in the top 8.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Madera86 - 05-29-2023

C'mon guys. Suck it up and make your move.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2023

Right now, it's 3 teams for 2 spots and Stanford is on the outside.

7. ASU +10 through holes 13-16
8. Virginia +11 through holes 17-18
9. Stanford +12 through holes 14-16

No Stanford player is under par with 4 holes to play. Stanford is also at a significant disadvantage in that they still have to play 18, the hardest hole on the course while ASU and Virginia finish on the front 9.

Stanford is going to need help from ASU and Virginia. If they par in, odds are long that Stanford can catch them.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Madera86 - 05-29-2023

Yes! Back into 8th place. I guess we have to save up some strokes going into the 18th and hope for help from Virginia and ASU, but we're closer than we've been in awhile.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2023

Virginia has completed its round and posted +11. They are just about assured of advancing.

Stanford and ASU are now tied at +11 with a few holes remaining. They are competing for the final spot.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - cardfan77 - 05-29-2023

Currently tied for 7th at +11. ASU at +12. If Virginia, Stanford, and ASU all end up at +11, will there be a 3-way tie break for 2 spots?

Scratch that.. Stanford just tied ASU at +12. Aaarrrgghhh

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-29-2023

ASU has completed its round and posted +12.

If Barclay Brown pars 18, Stanford will post +12 and the teams will go to a playoff. Anything higher, and Stanford will not advance. A birdie is a near impossibility. Only 3 players have birdied 18 the last 2 days.

Stanford is mighty lucky to be in this position. Brown hit a dead duck hook with his driver on 17 that somehow ricocheted off a tree into a decent lie from which he was able to make par. He had that in his head as he stood on the tee at 18, but nailed his tee shot in the middle of the fairway. Ethan Ng drove into a fairway bunker on 18, played out short of the green, pitched up 30 feet short of the hole and amazingly made the putt for par.

If needed, the playoff format will involve all 5 golfers from Stanford and ASU each playing one hole from 14 through 18. Low aggregate score wins.

Middle of the fairway, middle of the green and 2 putts for Brown. Stanford ties ASU! We're going to a playoff for the 8th spot.
