Stanford exposes false choices. The resurgence of the football program exemplifies that.

I'm sure there have always been blue chip recruits who want to have both strong academics and a shot at a NC, but it seems like that has become a more common thread the past ten years. Yes, that coincidies with Stanford's rise, so maybe those stories are more commonly shared in support of the Stanford narative, but I wonder if all the reporting on the business of sports, the high risk/reward nature of NFL contracts, and the better understanding of a blue chip education has seeped into the culture of high school sports more than in the past.
Can we measure how much academics has become an increasing priority among recruits?

Was he on our radar at all?
We offered Jack West and he accepted early so he was not publicly on our radar. If Brevin White has a career like Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jack West did not pan out, we can wonder about this one.
What's most interesting to me about this particular recruit is that his brother Brady White, who is at ASU, and injured early in the season, was on our radar. Given that the younger brother has the academic chops to commit to Princeton, there's a strong likelihood that the older brother did as well. Yes, this is my hobby horse. Brady White was the year we did not take a QB (2015).

Brady White camped at Stanford but we never offered. That being said, he's a backup at ASU and hasn't shown much yet.
I think Brevin White was highly rated early by recruiting services, partly due to his brother. But I believe he ended up losing the starting job at his high school and ended up transferring high schools. I don't think he had many commitable offers from P5 schools.

We offered another QB, 5* Tanner McKee (
https://247sports.com/Article/Stanford-offers-quarterback-Tanner-McKee-105603736/Amp). Since he is expecting to take a mission, he would come to Stanford in 2020.
Also, on QB, we made JT Daniels top 4, along with Michigan, USC, and UW. Not a 2018, but relevant for the commitment of Amon-Ra.

Looks like academics won't be an issue:
"He also has a 4.2 grade-point average, so he wont have a difficult time figuring out a complicated playbook."

If the school he chooses is the reverse order of whoever makes the biggest asses of themselves on his Twitter feed groveling for him to go to their school, J.T. Daniels will be wearing Cardinal and White. Michigan will finish in 4th.

Nicholas Petit-Frere looks academically qualified:
"Petit-Frere attacks Berkeley Preps tough academic curriculum and sits on a 3.7 GPA."

Chris Murray is at least academically motivated:

More 2018 offers:
DE: Andres Fox

Don't know if I've seen anyone with a quicker first step than Fox.
DT: Thomas Booker

Usually don't see highlights of DTs intercepting passes in the End Zone like Linebackers, but in Booker's you do.

Decommit from Northwestern. Same high school as Taylor Skaufel, who was a DB in the Harbaugh era.

This guy has some impressive video. Not too often that Stanford crosses paths with Oklahoma on the recruiting trail. You can tell JMF has a big frame to grow into, and can see him projecting to OLB, when watching his video. The physicality he plays with really stands out.
