you may be right about the conversation with the coach. speaking from my college experience, I didn't really want the coach advising me on shot selection. yardage, wind, pin etc were different or what other teammates may have hit (especially on par 3s).Â

Maguire has more high level competitive experience than the Duke golf coach. If he was out there advising her, he was just messing with her head, not helping at all.

Earlier in the thread I believe there was a reference to "mercenary" type players who join a team in the middle of the year. Dylan Kim enrolled at Baylor in January and immediately began playing on the golf team. She was an early enrollee. http://www.baylorbears.com/sports/w-golf/spec-rel/111314aaa.html
We have seen this in football - kids graduating after the first semester of their senior year, then enrolling in college so they can participate in spring practice. But I was not aware that this happened in golf.Â
Apparently happens all of the time. U$ got the #1 Juco player, and then conveniently enough she was able to compete in January.Â

Golf really is an individual sport, so as soon as these schools can find a way to get the players on campus they are essentially ready to go.

Farm93, the article says that the #1 juco player will enroll in the fall. The player who joined the team mid-year was frosh Amy Lee. She destroyed Stackhouse yesterday 6 & 4. But I do take your point that this practice of adding players mid-year is not uncommon.Â

Duke played better all week long AND played better today despite the 3-2 loss. Likely not a big deal either way, both had strong #1s and a great week of golf.
not so sure about Duke playing better in all the matches against Baylor. at least in the match between Whyte and Maguire, Whyte outplayed Maguire on the 20 or so holes I watched. Whyte let Maguire back in the match with an awful 3 putt from 35 feet on 17 (a 2 putt and she wins) and then almost let her back in on the last hole with another awful 3 putt from 30 feet or so on the last hole. Maguire failed to fly the ball 200 yards off the tee with driver on the last hole. it was a pretty ugly shot.
The stroke totals over the week tell the story. Duke had a much lower stroke count almost every day. Duke, unlike Baylor, led at some point in all 5 semi-final matches and thanks to two big wins played fewer strokes vs Baylor. In the Quarters Duke destroyed their opponent, while Baylor had to rally just to advance. And in qualifying stroke play Duke was the best team on the course except on the fourth day when they realistically had nothing to play for as their spot in match play was quite secure before they started the session.
This was not to imply that Baylor is not good just that Duke seemed to be stronger around the course. The one caveat was Duke's #5 was not playing well all week long. And I guess that poor play ultimately caught up with them as it was their #5 that lost in 24 holes.

Ooops. Sorry.
Actually the USC situation then proves just how common the January arrivals are in this sport. On the TV coverage on Monday they went on and on about how this January arrival had helped the team so much. Given that USC is quite fond of January admits I guess it should be expected that they would do that for golf too.
And I do see the benefit in women's golf since a lot of these women just want to get a few seasons of college golf before they turn pro. So why sit in HS waiting for summer amateur events when you can get on a college team and play competitive golf ASAP.

The slope of her lie would have helped the shot she should have hit. The ball was below her feet, which promotes a fade. The lie, in fact, and the edge of the hazard actually discouraged a shot to the middle or left of the fairway. It pointed a clear path toward the right edge of the green, for a shot that would safely and softly fade right and set up the ideal third shot.Â
The farther left she aimed, the more the edge of that hazard came into play. Just seeing her lie and that edge, without even knowing the green complex, told me "She has to play out to right." But she didn't.Â
The lie, the lip of the hazard, and the ideal line for her third shot all argued against the shot she played. Why in heaven's name did she hit it?

Y'all are being a touch harsh I think. She was Duke's #5 for a reason. 24 holes in and someone is going to mess up. Nature of the game and all.
Not many players in NCAA golf are likely prepared for every teammate and the entire staff trying to help you make shots in front of national TV coverage for a shot at the NCAA finals. That's pressure that probably did not help the decision making.
FWIW - During the coverage the commentators noted that her sister, Duke's #1, really seemed to play her own game and never had coaches with her. Can't help but wonder if her sister would have preferred that independence from the staff too.

"The player who joined the team mid-year was frosh Amy Lee. She destroyed Stackhouse yesterday 6 & 4."
Wait . . . how is that possible?
Could have sworn I read somewhere it would be Stackhouse in a rout! BTW, hope the source is correct about today's match - I'm thinking "yes" (unless a 6 & 4 destruction destroyed that oh-so-vital ingredient in any competitive sports: confidence).
Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final -

These criticisms doesn't seem harsh to me. A fifth person on a very good college golf team has a lot more years and coaching that I ever had.
It was not a poor decision; it was an inexplicably foolish one. Anyone who cares enough about golf to knows it basics knows not to hit that shot to that spot. I really can't think of a decision made in a sporting event that bewildered me more than this one, and I was here for Walt Harris.

Don't be silly. This is match play golf. Any player over 18 holes can beat any other player. I was still an odd call to have #1 v #5. And I would submit Stanford was quite fortunate to win despite their #1 losing to USC's #5.
In the finals it is #3 v #4, #5 v #3, #1 v #2, #4 v #5 and #2 v #1. That seems like a much more balanced collection of matches, on paper.Â
Re: Women's Golf at NCAA Final -

The actual prediction was not a prediction, but merely the obvious comment "You figure Stackhouse to win in a rout."Â And you do, while still realizing she's playing match play golf. (And that Stackhouse has been prone to lost rounds this season.)Â
For the same reason, you'd figure Stackhouse to rally because she usually has. But it's golf and they're gassed. She coiuld play even worse.
Here's a good prediction for today: The least exhausted team will win. These woman have played around 110 holes in five days, 36 under the stress of team match play and in Florida heat and humidity. The players may still have their legs, but the nerves are going.
Every measure you can find--right down to Sagarin's one-hundreth of a stroke per round averages--says these two teams are dead solid even.Â

I am watching the Golf Channel pre-match coverage. Stanford getting plenty of coverage and plenty of respect. Coach Walker said in an interview, "The team is exhausted. It's been a long week. They played 13 hours of golf yesterday, walked probably 12 miles in 100 degree heat. Did not sleep well last night. But Baylor is in the same boat." She said the team had just gotten off a call with Michelle Wie who asked if they were nervous. When they answered "Yes", Wie told them how lucky they were to be nervous because if they were not they were sitting at home like all of the other eliminated teams.Â

Here's the current status:
Danielson 2-up through 6
Aubert 2-up through 5
Stackhouse all squared through 2
Eijkenboom down 1 through 3
(Lauren) Kim down 2 through 4
So, currently we are up 2, down 2, and all squared in 1. Looks like another exciting afternoon.
