WVB: SC 3 Stanford 2 -
81alum - 09-27-2015
We lost to SC at home today in the closest possible way--15/13 in the 5th set. This is the only time we play SC during the regular season this year. SC remains unbeaten. We are now 7-3, with losses to Penn State, SC, and North Carolina.
Losing Inky for the season certainly hurts, but what I saw today could not be explained just by her loss. Madi's setting seemed to leave a lot to be desired, and quite often we seemed to dink ineffectively or hit into blocks. I am not a particularly experienced VB watcher, so I wonder if some of the rest of you can offer insight. With all our problems, we still nearly pulled it out in that fifth set, so maybe we are not so bad. But I just did not see the confident, on-target hitting I was used to seeing last year.
One bright spot is the emergence of Hayley Hodson, who had 14 kills (but also 10 errors.)Â Not bad for a frosh!
Overall our hitting was only .219. Lutz was great, hitting .500, and Howard was good, hitting .355, but what the heck happened to last year's star Jordan Burgess, who hit .065, on 31 total attempts? There were games last year when I thought she was superwoman. Did SC have some kryptonite?

I understand Burgess is playing through an injury, or maybe multiple injuries.

Multiple yes. Sadly. Great game so close after down in the 5th set we came back well. Losing inky and before that Mcgeehe really leaves us short in the middle and with Burgess working thru things tough in the front row at times. Awesome games by lutz and Howard and McKenna
