Rules Question - CTcard - 10-04-2015

There was a weird (to me) determination of the appropriate down after a penalty on UA while UA had the ball on the first drive of the second half. On second and 8 UA completes a 3 yard pass. After the play there was a dead ball personal foul on UA. The yardage was marked off from the final spot of the preceding play (which is correct I think) but second down was replayed (I had thought that it should be third down).

Now I am sure the call must have been correct, as neither the announcer-team nor the Stanford coaches seemed to show any concern - but it makes me wonder if anyone here knows the general rule.

It's a little difficult to find this down-situation specified exactly in the rulebook, but it seems that the relevant passage would be,
Quote:RULE 5 ...
Foul Between Downs
ARTICLE 6
After a distance penalty incurred between downs, the number of  the next down shall be the same as that established before the foul occurred, unless enforcement for a foul by Team B leaves the ball on or beyond the line to gain or a penalty mandates a first down (Rule 9-1) (A.R. 5-2-6-I and A.R. 10-1-5-I-III)

[Team B = defense]

Anyone know the exact rule applied here?

That confused me too. IIRC the ref didn't specifically say that it was a dead ball foul (or "after the play"), so it must have been while the play was still going.

Well, I thought the ref did say it was a dead ball foul.
And the fact that the yardage was marked off from the end of the play would seem to confirm ... or so I thought.

If he didn't say, he should have. it occurred well after the whistle.

I also thought he said it was after the play, and was also confused why it wasn't third down, as was the whole group around me.  Maybe they screwed up?

Do you remember when the play was (I didn't record the game, so can't go back and watch)?  Could ask some of the Stanford reporters on twitter if they know, or see if they can ask around.

I'm completely unaware of any circumstances in which a dead ball foul would be a replay of the down, so that's definitely an interesting question. In the stands it was hard to tell what the penalty was so I just assumed it was live.

Yes I do.

It was the first series of the second half, and the penalty was after the second play from scrimmage of the half.

It was followed by a 5 yard illegal procedure to become second and 25, then a 21 yard completion (third and four) and Randall's longest run of the game at 28 yards to extend the drive and eventually a touchdown.
