Especially since one of the QBs is a walk-on.

Apparently, by the by, there's some drama brewing with Oregon's 2016 class -- their four-star QB commit decommiting, possibly replaced by a local (i.e. Eugene native) whose best offer is from Montana...State.

I hope their program collapses along with their cheesy gimmicky offense, their bandwagon fan base and their fashion victim uniforms. Then Uncle Phil might stop wasting his largesse on them and direct it to his other alma mater and more deserving athletic program.

Oregon's recruiting is season outcomes-dependent. If they don't sign some good O and D linemen and linebackers in this class, they are almost certain not to rebound. And if they fail to come up with a top 20 QB who can really run, and run the zone read, the Ducks's further slippage is likely to turn this into "Remember when the Ducks were really good?"Â
They've looked horrible in the two games I've watched: almost all of the Utah game and about 25 minutes of Colorado. Two very good running backs in Freeman and Griffin, and a very good DL in Buckner, and that covers it. Lockie looked like a contender for the worst QB in the Pac 12. No way the Ducks can win 8 games if he continues like that.

Maybe this is a good place to review the Pac 12 QB performances so far. For a summary I prefer PER - which has lots of issues I don't like but is at least a summary efficiency ranking and I know what goes into it. And of course QB stats in particular, reflect team strength as much as the individual player.
These numbers do not take strength of opponents into account.
Rank  QB    Rating
1.   Kessler  201.2
2.   Goff    170.5
3.   Hogan   169.8
4.   Solomon 159.0   (Randall 96.6)
5.   Falk    148.1
6.   Browning 142.5
7.   Wilson   140.4
8.   Rosen   134.6
9.   Lockie   129.5    (Adams 142.3, Alie 144.7)
10.  Bercovici 127.7
11.  Liufau   121.9
12.  Collins   121.4
I think Kessler and the $C offense is pretty good. He has a history of poor performance against the best teams, but had pretty good (though below his average) ratings vs Stanford and ASU.
Surprised Bercovici so low. ASU has definitely had their problems.
I have seen a little bit of discussion of Liufau as one of the better NFL prospects in the Pac 12. I haven't seen him enough to have a strong opinion - but it could be true that the poor rating is as much the team as Liufau himself.
Rosen's PER isn't terrible for a true frosh QB, at least if you project that as a full season rating. Two years ago Hackenberg (PSU) had 134.0 and he is still talked about for the NFL [though not because of actual performance as far as I can tell] and Goff was at 123.0 [though he has improved a lot]. It's hard to figure out trajectory with Rosen, his per game PER numbers are 192.5 -> 100.1 -> 74.8 -> 176.6 -> 125.3.

If Rosen sustains at 134 PER it'd be one of the best full-season performances for a true freshman QB ever. Which is why it's almost always a bad idea, assuming viable alternatives, to start one.

I don't hope they collapse as a team. I actually like their gimmicky offense. It's really fun to watch, and I liked Chip's willingness to try the unexpected. I do hope they collapse just enough to lose the bandwagon fan base. The longtime fans are quite normal. The Johnny Come Latelies, who have no affiliation with Oregon or any other university can be obnoxious and want to only talk trash. I banned one such troll several years ago. The fashion victim uniforms have to go, too.

I agree, though I don't know where to find such a ranking compiled.
I seem to remember that last year was remarkable for good performances by true frosh QBs. We had Kaaya at Miamis PER=145.9, Barrett tOSU PER=169.8 ... and I thought another that I cannot find right now.

I dislike a lot of things about the Ducks, but their creativity on offense isn't one of them. I hated playing them at their peak, but it's tough to deny that when it's clicking, that thing is a thing of beauty. It's too bad Chip's system doesn't appear to be clicking in the NFL. I guess it relies on playing athletes who can't keep up with the speedsters at Oregon, which you can't exploit on a weekly basis in the NFL.

Actually it relies on steamrolling the refs to cooperate by speeding up their tempo dramatically, beyond a reasonable level. The Pac12 was willing to go along, the NFL not so much.

Barrett was a redshirt freshman.
Matt Hinton had a partial accounting for true frosh QBs here (

Whoops. As I was writing that I sort of knew something was wrong. I read on his bio that he enrolled at tOSU in January ... but somehow missed it was January 2013 - not 2014.

Speaking of Oregon's uniforms, I think the throwbacks they wear (yellow helmet and pants, kelley green jersey) are very slick and should be made into full-time duds. Obviously it won't happen because 17 year olds apparently go gaga for tinfoil numbers, but that's just my worthless $0.02.

Somebody on this board ~ I think it was Redrum ~ once called the Ducks, in yet another appalling uniform iteration, "The Fighting Hi-Liters." I always thought that was an apt description.
