The weekend -
Hulk01 - 10-05-2015
Cal has a weak defense, but Utah's isn't lethal. Sure, the game is at home for the Utes, but they weren't a very good home team last year, and they managed to beat good teams but lose to ordinary and bad ones. Especially with the pressure of a high ranking, I say take Cal and the points.Â
Friday night, Steph and I will be in full Stanford regalia--okay, sweatshirts--scouting the tight end for Oaks Christian. If any others of you are there, let us know. . .
I'd take the points against Michigan State, too. And I'd bet big against the Utes or Spartans finishing in the top ten.

I wouldn't discount the effect of altitude on a sea-level team. I'll be rooting for the Utes, hoping they sweep the South so we can beat them in the Pac12 championship game.

Wut? The Utes can still go to the P12 CG and be flogged by Stanford even if they lose to Ca.l. USC, UCLA, and ASU each have a loss already. Wouldn't a Big Game for the Pac-12 North title be awesome?!???!

Would rather have revenge for our OT home loss last season; would rather beat a top 5 team than that overrated team from across the Bay.

College Game Day will be in SLC this Saturday. I'm guessing that the Utes will bury the B.ears up to their necks in ant hills. That stadium will be rocking, literally.

BostonCard - 10-05-2015
Utah opened at -6, and the line has moved to -7. I think that's a fair line. I think Utah should rightfully be favored (wins over Oregon and Michigan are better than anything that Cal has demonstrated), but I will grudgingly admit that Cal is a dangerous team. Still, Cal's defense relies on takeaways, to an unusual extent, and Utah's offense is prodigious in avoiding them.
Other odds from the day:
Oregon at -17 (down from -20.5) versus the Cougars looks tempting unless Wazzoo figured out how to stop the run. OTOH, I don't know that the Ducks can stop the pass. 17 is a lot of points; I may lean towards WSU.
Arizona at -10 (down from -12.5) versus OSU. Hard to differentiate between two beatdowns against iffy QB's, but Arizona looked less intimidating than OSU. Then again, maybe UofA gets Solomon back, and that might be worth two touchdowns.
USC at -17 versus UW. The Pac-12's best offense goes up against the best defense. 17 points are a lot, but probably not enough.
ASU at -15 (up from -12.5) versus Colorado. Seems like it ought to be a no brainer for ASU.

@BC. Any idea why the Stanford vs AZ spread dropped so much last week?

Too much money on Stanford after hearing that Solomon+Scooby would be out?

That would have moved the line in the opposite direction.

Ca.l fans who can't believe Stanford might be good?

Stanford is now 4-1 against the spread (for these purposes it always helps to lay your egg on the first game of the season).
I haven't kept track, but I think Cal is 0-3 against the spread in the last three games. I don't know about the first two.

Vegas Insider's page has them at 2-3 ATS, and with a win against UW (

I thought the line was at -7, but I was wrong; thanks for the correction.

Perhaps the opening line was; Vegas Insider uses the closing lines to judge ATS success. (e.g. the closing line for STAN-ARIZ is listed at -12:

Not a gambler, but I'll be cheering for our friend 61_Shasta's team because I never root for the weenies.

I'd much rather beat Cal to knock them out of bowl eligibility, so how 'bout they lose ask their remaining games?

That line is preposterous. Maybe if the game were in Berkeley, but at altitude with the sieve that is the Low APR U defense? I wish my wife were still in Reno I'd have put down a good amount on the Utes at that spread.

Speaking of gambling. . . Would someone explain to me why all these real money fantasy site, e.g. FanDual, are legal but it is illegal to bet on games online? I don't get it.

The law says fantasy sports aren't gambling.

Very strange. So, if I plop down my money tomorrow, pick a team and win or lose, I'm not gambling my money. What am I doing? Paying for entertainment? I'm not complaining or protesting, just confused. Not as confused as understanding the AMT, but confused.
