From his "Grading the Week" blog for C.al

"*** Couldn’t help but notice the crowd: 42,042. For an undefeated team. On Homecoming.

What in the world …"

All I heard from Ca'l fans the last 5 years was that if THEY had a good team, they'd be filling the stands, SRO.

Wilner ranges from harsh-but-fair to trollish in his Stanford assessment: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2015/10/05/stanford-football-grading-the-week-64/

Because I feel like being grumpy, here's the objectionable part:
Quote:Without quarterback Anu Solomon and Scooby Wright and others, Arizona was completely overmatched.

Anything closer than three or four touchdowns would have been a surprise.

... If it was such a surprise, why did the spread get bet down from -17.5 to -10? I'm not saying you have to take the gambling public's views as gospel, but you should at least account for it.

In Wilner's defense (a phrase you won't hear very often from me), in his Pac-12 Picks of the Week he picked Stanford, giving 17.5 points.  So he's being consistent.

Quote:Then again: Are there any top-notch defenses on the Cardinal schedule?

UCLA might be if healthy, but the Bruins are missing three starters.

Washington? Nope.

Umm, maybe not "elite", but Washington has a top-30 total defense (#13 if you go by yards/play) and a #17 scoring defense.

They are going to be the second best defense we face all year.

Two performances define Washington's defense thus far this year--giving up 16 pts to Boise St. (in a loss), and giving up 30 pts to kal (in a loss).  Is BSU that good?  But "holding" kal to "only" 30 pts...okay, maybe the Huskies have something going on there.  Is the reunion game a trap game?

Certainly never good to overlook anyone, especially a team that always seems amp-ed to play us.  I would hope having a 9 day rest would give the team enough time to concentrate, though.

Well, I am not yet convinced UW has a better defense than und. They're close in overall raw stats. We'll see how things play out.

Movement of the line has much more to do with where the money is being bet than what it "should" be.

But the bettors are, on balance, attempting to estimate what the score should be.

Leave it to the guy with the Milton Friedman quote to understand the relevance of the efficient market hypothesis here.

OTOH, I would have to admit that I have had what in retrospect would have to be called a free lunch.

Wilner keeps trolling the Bears:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2015/10/06/pac-12-football-power-ratings-utah-remains-on-top-shuffling-elsewhere/

He has them as #7 in his power rankings, behind two 2-loss teams (Oregon and ASU).

I wouldn't be surprised if Wilner considered Oregon getting creamed by Utah a better result than Cal squeaking past WSU.
