Stanford compared to our opponents' opponents -

Steve Durrett used to do something like this with his RPR (Relative Performance Ratings [or maybe it stood for Ratios]), but the last entry I saw for him was for 2013, and his was based on the ratio of performance, while this is based on absolute difference. Bottom line, we are gaining 112 yards more of total offense than our opponents typically have given up, and give up 174 yards of total offense less than our opponents typically have gained. In all, that's good enough to rank third behind Baylor and Alabama in Phil Steele's overall ratings.

The interesting question is, "so what does this mean?"
For instance, nothing against Baylor, but it's not terribly impressive that they blew stuff up real good against Southern Methodist, Lamar, and Rice. They're supposed to (and supposed to do it better than anyone else, too.)
On the other hand, Alabama has played a slightly more rugged schedule.
It's hard to tell where Stanford, exactly, falls in the spectrum. Stanford's played three times on the road, which I would guess is unmatched. But the quantitative estimates of strength of schedule are all over the place. Sagarin loves us (#6 SOS); others do not. (ESPN's FPI lists the related strength-of-record at #16; S&P+ has our SOS at #19; FEI SOS at #39...). And then, qualitatively, the team has faced a lot of opponents in utter upheaval. (To be fair, a Stanford defense with Phillips, Anderson and Davis sounds much more appealing...)

Steve calculated Relative Performance Ratios.
Here is the site:

But be careful, the links to what should be current data seem to go to some dodgy site selling you stuff that screws up the back function on my browser.
Links actually working are those listed as the archives, and cover up to as recent as the end of the 2014 regular season (+ conference championship games I think).
Typically Steve says that until about half way through the season, the teams aren't connected enough for his numbers to have any validity so he doesn't do the calculations early on. Perhaps he will soon start on 2015 numbers.
Has he been on this site lately?
