Don't Fear the Chipper. The coach to fear: Tom Herman.

Herman has less than a season of head coaching experience at Houston, and no ties to the west coast.

There is going to be a new rumor every week. Someone will probably start speculating on "Shaw to USC". Best thing to do is ignore all of it.

I expect the Shaw rumors to come fast and furious

Anyone with two brain cells to rub together would know Shaw leaving Stanford for USC is a total non-starter. Then again, we are talking about the sports media industry, so maybe those rumors will swirl.

Nobody said it would happen, but I guarantee you the rumors will be there. The national sports media will say anything if it will get them a few clicks.

What will happen ...
Assuming Sark is gone soon, which seems likely given the current mess - then come early next off-season, $C will hire a fairly big name coach. Sports writers will write the THIS is the hire that will get $C back to being a dominant program and message board posters will fret that now $C will pummel us all.
A couple of years will pass and this may happen or may not. Most likely not (at least to the level that lets the guy keep his job). Then the whole process starts again.
---------
Nonetheless, Sark is (was?) the perfect coach for us at $C in some ways.
He's a good recruiter. A good recruiter at $C sucks in the top LA talent and keeps it out of the rosters of our other rivals. We compete with $C as well, but with our national view they probably take less from us than others. (And while I haven't counted, my purely subjective guess is that there have been fewer guys we really wanted/thought possible who ended up at $C in the past year + than previously.)
So, a surplus of talented players go to $C and not elsewhere, where not only can they not all get on the field but it doesn't look like Sark is turning them into a team we cannot handle.
Perfecto.

For a variety of reasons, Shaw's interested are intertwined in Northern California. I don't see Shaw going to an outhouse of a college coaching job in SoCal. My core concern would be a perfect storm of bad-things-at-Stanford (given the AD and who-knows-what-happens-at-admissions) and the timing with Tomsula's ultimate failure. The Niners have had a litany of bad decisions and bad luck. My prediction prior to the season was 4-12. Tomsula's in waaaaaay over his head, and the forced parallel that Jed York was making between Steve Kerr and Tomsula is breathtakingly blind.Â
So Jed has had bad years. He got Harbaugh, who made Jed more sad and mad than glad, and he has Trent Baalke as his own personal Scylla, although Charybdis now coaches at Michigan. As bad as it was having Harbaugh around, Jed is about to find out what it's like to have driven his own train over the cliff. I wonder about Baalke and his track record. it seems he has drafted some good players, but has had some duds. Baalke's draft success has been mixed, particularly with problem personalities who couldn't turn it around and early retirement of successful high draft picks. 2010 and 2011 were good to very good drafts. 2012, there's no one left from that draft. 2013, 2014, pretty good.Â
http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2015/09/ranking-the-nfls-general-managers/?shared=email&msg=fail#photo-692047
Along those lines, I wonder about former 49er GM, Scot McLoughan, currently the GM at Washington. Supposedly he's suffered from Sark-style issues over the years, leading to short stints as the Niners' GM. I read an analysis of NFL GMs that ranked him 30 of 32, but generally praised him for great 49er drafts that "Trent Baalke is wrecking" and for reviving the Seahawks as a "senior personnel executive." Same article ranked Baalke at #13, but clearly based his ranking on the Niners' success under Harbaugh. The Sporting News ranked Baalke as #6 last year, but #18 this year, so his stock is falling fast in their eyes.
So the question: Does York fire both Baalke and Tomsula in the next 24 months? Does he fire just Tomsula? And how much guaranteed money will he throw at Shaw? Harbaugh's the highest paid college coach at $7 million (and earning it< BTW). Belichick, Payton, Fisher and Harbaugh all make between $7 mm and $8 mm annually. What if York throws $8-10 mms. for five years at Shaw?

How about Kyle Whittingham? Utah has been a pretty good stepping stone for CF head coaches.

Quick, somebody start one under a fake twitter account so we can laugh at whoever runs with it. Include some unique identifying details. :D

Don James? Bill Walsh and John Robindon can be his coordinators.

Think he means DJ Durkin, the Michigan defensive coordinator. I doubt they'd go for someone who's only been a coordinator,* though Durkin has a heck of a pedigree. (At Stanford as special teams coach, at Florida as special teams coach, at Florida as defensive coordinator, now at Michigan at defensive coordinator.)
*(though given the uncertainty about whether who's hiring -- if indeed there's even a position to hire *for*, who knows.)

Shouldn't USC fans eliminate any candidate that was mentioned two years ago? Those folks rejected USC at that point. If they rejected USC then, they are sure to reject USC now.
Matt Leinart is probably available at this point. He has ties to the Pete Carroll era. That seems to be Haden's only search criteria.
