Luck with some fancy pocket footwork and a TD pass. Colts up 21-17 in the first half. This is looking like a thriller in the making.

Which Stanford alums have seen action so far?

I've seen Luck, Fleener, Parry, Fleming, and Whalen.

I assume Anderson has played but haven't noticed as the game is merely on in the background for me. What about Jordan Richards?

Anderson is definitely in, though I haven't seen him do anything notable. Richards is active but I haven't seen him in.

Pretty sure someone was supposed to call time out if they didn't get a favorable look.  I'm fairly certain Whalen wasn't supposed to snap it.

He was probably told "snap it when the playclock hits 1" or something. I doubt he can really tells what's going to happen from there, and there's no way he would freelance the snap, he must've been following instructions. We're almost certainly going to hear something from Pagano about it.

Besides the general ridiculousness, from the Vine it looks like an illegal formation, too many men in the backfield. Geesh.

I would imagine the punt formation was supposed to baffle the Patriots into burning a timeout.  I don't think Whalen was actually supposed to snap the ball, as evidenced by Pagano screaming "Why did you snap it?" on the sideline.  Unfortunately, the Patriots are well-coached.

I'm definitely surprised that with all the resources spent on WRs the Colts are trotting out a guy they've had on the practice squad a bunch. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for him to be getting snaps, but it's surprising that he's the one doing it instead of Johnson, Montcrief, Dorsett, Hilton, etc.

The Stanford brand is taking a beating in the Boston area today. Every time I've tuned in to sports radio, they've gleefully discussed the botched play and never failing to mention that a STANFORD grad decided to hike the ball.

I hope no one in the Colts organization takes GW's performance in the Center position into account when deciding his future with the team considering, you know, he doesn't actually play that position.

I'd love to have seen that play executed correctly against the "right look". How was that going to deliver a conversion?

I think the "right look" would have been just one defender lined up on Whalen.  There, you'd assume Whalen snaps the ball and blocks the defender, with the "quarterback" having a lot of green in front of him. 

I realize this isn't exactly the biggest thing wrong with that play, but why have the QB lined up under center there?  Have him in the shotgun, where he can at least do something with it (including a pooch punt if nothing looks right). 

They did that with Pat McAfee--the best punter in football--sitting on the bench, too.  I'm all for the occasional fake punt to keep teams off balance, and McAfee has successfully converted a few in his day (both running and throwing), so if you want to draw something up, why not do it from a conventional punting formation?  And if the purpose was to draw off the defense, keep Luck out there, try and get someone to jump on a hard count, and either run a play (if Luck sees something he likes) or take the delay of game penalty (if he doesn't), in which case you're still trotting out the best punter in the game to pin the Patriots back.  I get that execution was terrible, but it's difficult to understand the upside of that play and formation. 

Shame, too.  If the Colts punt there and get a stop, we're looking at a different ballgame, where the Colts stick with the (successful) run game a little longer instead of shifting to obvious passing formations and allowing the Patriots to load up in the secondary.  New England was clearly a better football team, but the Colts were in prime position to steal one there.Â
