A Question For the Board -

What running back--pro or college, Stanford or foe, now or ever--most resembles C Mac?
I have a nominee, but it took an accidental encounter on Sunday afternoon to suddenly come up with it.

Sproles, maybe.

Some irony there, as we took long looks at Sproles and his teammate at Olathe. I think Sproles may have been a non-starter, and that Olathe's QB looked admissible but wasn't at the top of our QB list.

Confirming my age: Gale Sayers.

I'll go with Eric Dickerson. Upright running style with long strides who's a lot better running in between the tackles than his size would suggest.
Not sure I buy the Sproles comparison considering C Mac is a half-foot taller.

I don't know, but was that running back ever the national player of the week?

Off the top of my head, I'm going to say Warrick Dunn.

Reminds me in some ways of Walter Payton. Roughly the same size, quick, able to bounce off tackles, good hands, with surprising power for a back his size.

Not Payton. Payton was a bowling ball with one of the best, strongest stiff arms in the business. He also went airborne over the goal line in ways that make Remound Wright look like a smurf.
I'll guess Reggie Bush.

I look forward to weighing in. Mac certainly is distinctive

I always felt like Toby's running style reminded me of Walter Payton--the way he would relentless run, break tackles, run, stiff arm, break tackles, and drag the pile for the extra 3 yards. Ahh, I miss both of those guys (in different ways of course)

Tony Dorsett

What's the identifying characteristics? Medium-tall upright runner, slender but can play inside, breakaway speed through the gap, good vision/anticipation in open field makes him useful on punt/kick-off returns? Usually avoids big hits as opposed to powering through them?  Good receiver out of the backfield?
Hmhhhh ..... Perhaps Marshall Faulk or Tony Dorsett? (It's been a while since I've seen film of Dorsett.)

Barry Sanders. And on pace to break one of his NCAA records.

The other #5 - Glyn Milburn.

Marshall Faulk comes to mind for me.

I honestly can't think of any.
Mac is listed at 6-1. Most of the guys I think of, like Thurman Thomas, James Brooks, Glyn Milburn, are all under 6ft.
I've called CMac a slightly less explosive Reggie Bush, so that's the best I can do.

Tony Dorsett...particularly with the vision and acceleration, and how he rarely seems to take a solid hit from a defender

When I see Mac, four things stick out, in this order:
1. His vision. It's remarkable.
2. His instinct/feel for the flow of the play and the defenders, and where the next gap will be.
3. His speed. Who has caught him? And, in recent games,
4. His ability to get two more yards than you expected; he's gotten much more powerful. If he gets even better at this--at yards after contact--he's the ultimate lethal running back.
I can't name a vision/instinct/fast running back who also surprised me with his yards after contact.Â
And if does improve on this, it's a nearly impossible offense for a defense to set up, because
Note: My numbers one and two are what figure most in my answer to, "What running back, ever, is C Mac most like?"

Milburn and Dorsett are good calls.
While C-Mac may not have the same uncanny ability to make defenders miss as did Nelson and Milburn, he might be a tad stronger in breaking tackles than those two (though Nelson, in particular, was underrated on this front - especially at college level).
I'm just enjoying watching the kid play. A lot.
P.S. The UCLA kicker essentially caught C-Mac on the KOR of 96 yards - at minimum he slowed him down so that Bruin teammates could tackle him before the end zone, and he did so when after trailing C-Mac at the turn up the sideline. That was a very impressive effort by the UCLA kicker (Fairburn?).
