a down year in the Pac-12 - TrumpCard - 10-23-2015

Other than Utah's win over Michigan, does the Pac-12 have a win over a good non-conference opponent this year?
Other than Stanford's game against UDFG, what regular season opportunities does the Pac-12 have to redeem itself?

Why does the Pac-12 need to redeem itself for anything?

I mean, what good nonconference win do most teams have? It's not like there are all that many marquee nonconference matchups.

I was wondering that too.  On the minus side, we have our loss to NW, ASU's loss to A&M, USC's loss to ND, and Oregon's loss to MSU.  The only high profile victory is Utah over Michigan, with a chance for us to add a victory over ND.  When looking at how one-loss conference champs might match up to each other came playoff selection time, some have said we would be in a tie with the SEC or B1G, but this year I'm not so sure.  Other years, yes, we have the OOC resume as a conference to demand to be on equal ground with them, but this year I feel that our high-profile OOC record would put us clearly below the SEC and B1G, while still above the ACC and Big12.

Stupac, I don't know enough about other conferences' schedules to address your question.  I just know that the Pac-12 has lost more than its share of non-conference games this year.  In addition to the games FR noted, UW lost to Boise State, which isn't exactly lighting it up.  Also, Wazzu really did a number on the conference by beating Oregon and OSU, but losing at home to Portland State.

The answer is there aren't any really impressive OOC wins by anyone.  Alabama beat Wisconsin.  Michigan State beat Oregon.  Oklahoma beat Tennessee.  UCLA beat Virginia.  Utah beat Michigan.  Cal beat Texas.  The reality is Stanford vs. Notre Dame and Florida vs. Florida State represent the OOC wins available with the most prestige, at the end of the season, but probably the entire season.

TrumpCard, I agree that the Pac-12's national standing is down a bit this year, that Utah's win over Michigan is the best we have (though, in retrospect, that's a really, really good win), and that Stanford playing the Irish is the best chance for the Pac-12 to pick up a marquee win (and, in fact, it's the only nonconference game left on the Pac-12 slate).

Overall, though, I think the best chance for the Pac-12 to redeem itself in pollsters' eyes (and thus give Stanford a bit of a boost) is for the teams everyone expected to be good to end the season ranked.  That means that UCLA's win over C.al was great, because not only did it ease our path to the North title, but it moves the Bruins back toward the Top 25.  So, while other Pac-12 teams don't have nonconference games left, there are in-conference opportunities to improve perception.  If Oregon wins the rest of their games (except for the one against us), they should end the season ranked.  Same for UCLA (perhaps with a loss to Utah--a 9-3 UCLA team should be ranked at season's end).  (Sorry U$C and C.al, you get sacrificed on this particular altar.)

To be fair, Clemson beat Notre Dame already this season.  If it would count as a prestige win for Stanford, it should count as a prestige win for Clemson.

UCLA did beat BYU as well.  They are 5-2 with losses against only UCLA and Michigan.

Well, I kind of count that as a "conference" win for Clemson given ND is playing 6 ACC teams a year now.

Hmm, yeah UW lost to Boise, but they beat Utah State who is rolling and could easily win the Mountain West at 10-2 overall (their other loss being to Utah).  And yeah, WSU embarrassed itself against Portland State, but they did beat Rutgers who (somehow, geez the Big-10 might be real bad after the top) appears to be a middling road Big-10 team, kind of like how WSU might be a middling Pac-12 team.  Don't forget UCLA beat BYU who currently only has two losses and might not have another one on it's schedule.  There are good wins (or potentially good wins) in there, they're just mixed in with more losses than we've had the last couple years.
