It does look like a painting (wonder if that was the intent?) and the injury sounds scary. I hope he fully recovers.

Stanford linebacker Fred Campbell was forced to retire after his "C -1 vertebrae was split in two" according to this old Mercury-News article.
Quote: STANFORD As he waited for test results at Stanford Medical Center a day later, Fred Campbell still didn't think his neck injury was severe.
The Stanford middle linebacker knew the pain was intense. But he never would have imagined he had risked his life by playing in the second half of a football game against San Jose State the night before.

Yes, I googled him to see what he might be up to now. I came away impressed.

I love the final statement in his interview on the process of applying for an NSF fellowship. In response to the final question "Anything to Add?", he signs off with " GO STANFORD FOOTBALL ". Simply awesome:-)

The photo is just a somewhat-saturated photoshop job. Best of luck to Russell in his recovery. Neck injuries seem pretty scary.

Sadly, he will need neck surgery and be out the rest of the season. I wish him the best of luck in his recovery.
