Big Game 1900 -

I can't believe I hadn't heard about this tragedy until today -- described here in a Stanford Magazine article as the deadliest sporting disaster in American history. I'd be curious to know if anyone here already knew about this.

I'd certainly never heard a thing about it. Thanks for posting the link.

Heard something about it before, but never knew the details. I wonder if the earthquake helped erase its memory shortly after.

That is odd. I just came across an article about the 1900 Big Game disaster a few weeks ago--had never hear of it before. And after 50 years of ignorance, I hear about it a second time in a matter of weeks.

That's one of the points of the SF Weekly article--it would thankfully never get that bad today due to comparative negligence and litigation. But yes, what a tragedy almost lost to the sands of time.

Slightly OT, but relative to an understanding of the times 100+ years ago:

Given the relatively chronological propinquity of the 1900 disaster and the 1906 switch from football to rugby, any connection? Also, re: the wikiarticle above, is the fact that our 12 year recusal from football seems to have diminished our respect from the Eastern media one reason why the West seems to continue to be the crazy uncle in the attic, football wise?
