Re: Final: Stanford 42, Colorado 10 - Trevmiesterj - 11-07-2015

What stood out for me watching the first half of this game was the tackling by the defense and the play calling by the coaches.

It seemed that whenever the Buffs had a decent pass play they rarely picked up any YAC.  I don't really recall the defense missing a tackle, often stopping the Colorado runner within 5 yards or less of the catch.

The play call of the day was the Schultz touchdown.  Colorado, digging in hard for the jumbo package at the goal line on 4th and 1 and sensing that a stop could change momentum, were totally fooled by Hogan selling the fake for the easy TD lob.

And of course, Stanford Quarterback, #8, Kevin Hogan.

Yep, great call. The pass play out of the ogre formation will keep future opponents honest. They will have to defend the pass, rather than selling out to stop the run. That will open up more space for Remound Wright.

Same thing with the McCaffrey pass on the sweep play. Opponents will have to respect it now.

I heard a report three games ago that we ranked just behind Washington in fewest yards allowed after contact.  Yes. these have been excellent tackling Stanford teams for several years.  This front seven is particularly good, and the DBs are excellent although they suffer by the comparison with departed Alex Carter, who was superb.

At the beginning of the year, I thought the tackling in the secondary was the largest drop off from last year to this year, albeit an expected one due to the youth and inexperience. See the first half against USC for a good example of that, though to be fair their skill players tend to make most tacklers look average. The improvement over the course of the season has been truly impressive, and this secondary should be a force for years to come. Whatever we need to do to keep coach Akina around we absolutely have to do.

Watching the TD pass to Rector on 3rd & 18, what I like the most is that Rector was probably the third option.  Hogan was looking right and given the length of time he was doing so, my guess is he looked off two receivers.  Then he came back to the left and delivered a perfect pass.

Kudos to the TWU for giving him time to be able to do that too.
