Cal Board thread of the week -
amartinsu13 - 11-08-2015
After giving up an Oregon school record 777 yards of offense, Cal fans made this thread:

My favorite answer: "the school I wish I had gotten into's OC/OL coach"
Re: Low APR U Board thread of the week -

My next favorite response: "Cal is a second rate program with a 3rd rate administration and a 4th rate fan base. Why would any competent head coach want to come here? Why would any hot shot assistant do so?"

I recall Stanford fans making similar comments in the early 2000s.

Sonny is probably moving on on his own, right?

That presumes someone is going to offer him a job. Doubt it will be a Power 5 job. None of those programs wants a coach whose major conference plateau is .500

To be fair, USC hired Sark. So if Sonny can just get to 7 wins....

My favorite speculation about where Goff will be next year:
Quote:Graduate transfer to the school I wish I had gotten into to study the psychological and sociological effects of playing video games, i.e. video game socio-psychology in industrialized societies.
Dykes tries to block it but gets overturned by the administration.

Obviously a joke, but would we even want him? Even with his gifts it's not clear he could run our system better than Chryst.

We could play him at safety.

It would take him six years to learn the playbook

If (like me) you occasionally enjoy the recursiveness of watching C.al watch Stanford than this thread is for you - 4 pages of posts on just how Harbaugh turned around Stanford. It starts out on recruiting and then goes into Turley, housing for assistant coaches. star appeal, power offense and, this being a C.al board, references to grade inflation, the glove and steroids. Not as much of the later three as you may expect.
http://bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?96977-What-did-Harbaugh-do-to-turn-recruiting-around
It's interesting to watch the B.ears reassess Harbaugh. "I remember when we used to laugh at him for drafting so many Tight Ends", "Maybe high school kids buy into that corny "Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind", etc.
Lots of depression and navel gazing going on over there. They are in the midst of their own Teevens/Harris moment and the whipsaw of raised hopes/deflation caused by a hot start followed by a four game losing streak has them in a dark place.

Teevens/Wlat didn't even provide a spark of hope. They were our Holmoes.

I just checked on that yesterday. The Good Post/Bad Post developer hasn't updated it since 2012, and Simple Machines Forum doesn't seem to be close to 2.1 Beta 3.

It's not particular to our friends across the bay, but I am always fascinated how myths grow and eventually everyone knows various stuff - that is in the end kind-of-true at best.
Harbaugh did like TEs. That has morphed into pontificating that Harbaugh started the Stanford turn around by recruiting a ton of TEs and turning them into other positions - particularly fast OL. There is even a specific post over there noting that in his first year Harbaugh signed 9 TEs that ended up populating the roster at all sorts of positions. Strangely, it seems that 9 isn't even intended as an overblown reference to "a lot", they seem to actually mean 9.
While recruiting TEs at all made Harbaugh an outlier, what actually happened with Harbaugh's classes was:
2007 - 1 TE, Coby Fleener
2008 - 1 TE, Konrad Reuland (officially a JC transfer)
2009 - 4 TE, Jordan Najvar, Ryan Hewitt, Levine Toilolo, Zach Ertz
2010 - 1 TE, Davis Dudchock
Harbaugh's crazy-for-TEs reputation was really just about one year.
Not a single one of these guys played for Stanford as an interior lineman.
The only one who switched positions was Hewitt - who was always a bit of a hybrid.
The overall hit rate was pretty good.
And of course we found ways to actually use a lot of TEs.

After the early 2000s we had two incompetent coaches followed by a guy who'd never coached above a non-scholarship FCS level. So if that's Kals trajectory we'll have a few more fun years of beating the stuffing out of them.

As the momentum in the bay area was turning, many Ca'l fans held up their recent dominance of Stanford as a sign of their program strength. I would regularly point out that a 6-0 record (or whatever it was) against Harris/Teevens shouldn't be a point of pride for any program, but you have to hold onto something. The same thing goes for Duck fans. Whenever "Oregon's Stanford problem" would be discussed, Duck fans would comment about their record against Stanford since 2000 and pretend like that's the relevant comparison.
That Ca'l fan discussion of what made Harbaugh so successful was actually refreshing for me to read. Many of the fans have moved on from "easy admissions and steroids" to admitting that Harbaugh and Stanford offered a unique opportunity and brought out the best in the recruited players. Those fans seemed to have evolved.

The high water mark of the Teevens/Harris era was Harris' first year, 2005. We went 5-6, with three of the losses coming in games in which we had the lead literally until the last minute. That was an improvement over the Teevens years. But things went south from there. . . .
