The Path to 12 -1 - indiancardinal - 11-09-2015

Our beloved Stanford Cardinal now stand tall at an impressive 8-1, possibly on the threshold of one of the most memorable Cardinal football seasons of our lifetimes. There is a lot of discussion on our path to the CFP and all the other teams in our path. The fact that we are in the mix at this stage in November makes Saturdays all the more exciting as it seems like we have a rooting interest in almost every game.

Just looking back a short 3 months ago, many if not most of us would have predicted a 9-3 season as the most reasonably optimistic outlook for our 2015 squad with a loaded offense and an unproven defense. Most people would have pegged the USC, Oregon and ND games as our likely losses.

We are now 4 wins away from 12-1. What are our chances of going 4-0 on this home stretch? The biggest advantage is that we are literally at home for these 4 games.

Oregon is looking to be the dangerous team we thought they may be. They would like nothing more than to knock us out of the CFP picture.
Cal is not as threatening but equally dangerous to play spoiler.
If we get through the above  2 unscathed, the ND game will be one for the ages.
Utah - our likely championship game opponent has been a thorn in our sides since they joined the PAC 12

Will the stars align?
Will the football gods smile on us?
Will our team  keep their heads through the next 4 weeks of the hype machine, midterms, finals and term papers?

What do the statisticians and the soothsayers among us say?

ROAST THE DUCKS!
GO STANFORD!!

Re: The Path to 12 -1 - winflop - 11-09-2015

Oregon - a lesser version of themselves.  Still dangerous, but the OL should have its way
Low APR U - will they even care by this time?  Maybe, but the way our DBs have been playing of late combined with the way Goff throws it up for grabs, I see another Stanford blowout
ND - this may end up being the highest quality game this series has seen in the 20+ years it's been going on.  I expect it to go down to the last play
Utah - our boys have revenge on their minds, they will see the CFP light at the end of the tunnel and deliver their best performance of the year

See you in Big D (or Miami)!

Of course they will care. It's Big Game. They will be out to make sure Scarlett doesn't win the axe. Treggs will try to make good on his dads promise. Goff may be playing in his last BG. Their season is highly disappointing and beating Stanford will be the only meaningful pre-season goal in their reach. They'll get up for the game. I doubt it's enough, but they'll be highly motivated.

Not sure what you mean by "high quality". It will likely be the highest ranked combined the two teams are when meeting. But the 2009-2011 games were great from my perspective. Especially 2009, with Toby carrying ND defenders on his back and ND letting them score a TD, knowing that's the only chance they had of winning. A thing of beauty.

I guess it's fun to be in the playoff mix, but I'm not pinning all my hopes on making the playoffs. If we can win our division and then
win the Pac-12 championship, I'll be quite happy. I know some people will be disappointed by not making the playoffs. But I remember too many really bad seasons to be disappointed with a season like this one. I'm just enjoying this ride.

The Pac-12 championship game is no longer played at the home stadium of one of the teams. It will be at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

Same here. Winning the Pac-12 and going to the Rose Bowl is still a very successful season.

Absolutely.  Besides, winning the Pac12 is the only goal we can achieve on our own.  The playoffs are in other hands.

At this point there are a number of things that would be, in and of themselves, disappointing.  Heaven forbid we lose Big Game or the conference championship game, but it has been a wonderful and interesting season no matter what.  Our team has put itself in a position to achieve a legendary outcome.  How fortunate we are as fans to have the opportunity to indulge in all these possibilities.

OK, so we're literally OR figuratively at home for those 4 games.  :P

Thanks for the reminder Terry. Anytime we are playing at a stadium that is a few stops down the track we can pencil it in as a home game.

Are the PAC 12 Championship games still on Friday nights?

I looked that up yesterday and was surprised by that "or". Why bother listing it for 15 minutes? And what makes the difference? Seems so strange to me.

Also, does anyone know when Stanford is going to do the ticket preorder thing? In the past they've sent out e-mails well before we had clinched, so I was expecting to see something by now.

Perhaps they figured it would be at least another week before it even became an issue?
