Well, Stanford won the first set 25-23, but they're collapsing in standard fashion to end the second set, giving up five out of the last six points to end it at 17-25.  UW is ranked at #3, no slouches there. (Stanford is #6.)

Stanford goes down 25-23, 18-25, 18-25, 15-25. Oof.

This match against Washington was a bit hard to watch. Prior to this match Stanford was clicking on all cylinders but tonight only 2 or 3 cylinders were clicking. Stanford really struggled without Hodson. Coach Dunnning tried different options with Vanjak on the outside, Alade in the middle and Brown playing full rotation but to no avail. I must say though, Brown played good. Howard struggled at times especially in serve receive. Plus the refs didnÊ»t help at all by not calling those heavy throws from Washington.Â
The team really needs Hodson especially during the NCAA tournament. Without Hodson, an early exit from the tournament is likely. I hope her injury is not serious. I hope she returns in time for the tournament and returns 100%.Â

Vanjak didn't look so good according to the stats. Hitting .095 on 21 attempts is not what you want out of anyone taking that many attempts.
Washington beat us on serve aces 6-1, blocks 13-5, and hit% .329 -.193. That hit% stat seems to say it all. Sigh.

If you want the glass half-full approach: U.SC is 27-1. Their one loss? A straight set [0-3] loss to Washington @ Washington about two weeks ago. At least we took one set from UW and did so WITHOUT our best hitter.Â
Vanjak has been playing pretty well, all things considered, as has Howard recently. Seems to me the game plan for UW after they adjusted for no Hodson was pretty simple: shut down Vanjak and Howard and see what the others could do. Burgess' numbers actually improved from last week, which is encouraging, but also likely due to extra attention being paid to Howard; I just hope Burgess' body can stand up to the extra wear and tear. Also, although I didn't see very much of the match, I saw a stretch in Game 3 where UW outscored us by something like 10-1 during a rotation where, with Hodson, we would have gone to her in the back row, but, without her, we just couldn't make anything work. Then, from looking at the box score, in Game 4 I think we went from something like down 12-13 to losing 15-25, suggesting a similar meltdown.
I didn't expect us to win the match @ UW to begin with. Without Hodson, I'm happy we managed to even get a set.

Ah, that's why Burgess had 45 total attempts...

Seems like a lesser matter given international events this weekend, but I am watching the Stanford-WSU volleyball match and am glad to report that Haley Hodson is playing. Stanford leads 2 sets to 1 right now.

BTW, Burgess's third injury was revealed on the UW broadcast. Besides the turf toe and shoulder issue, she strained an abdominal muscle. She seems to be playing more effectively lately, but I really hope she can get close to 100% soon.

Injury # 2 of 4 was her thigh. 4 total.Â

Iʻm just glad Hodson is back and Burgess is getting better. I like their chances in the NCAA tournament. It would be interesting to see where they will be placed for the regionals.
