Les Miles? - Hank 91 - 11-23-2015

With rumors swirling that Les Miles is on his way out at LSU (with boosters already committed to footing the bill for his buyout, which is in the neighborhood of $15-20MM), I'm wondering about possible destinations for the Hat. What about USC? I know some folks would hate that -- a great coach and recruiter at a rival Pac-12 school -- but I'd love it. He would only bring more national attention to the conference, he'd maintain a quality program there (say what you want, but I still believe it's good for the conference to have its marquee programs playing at a high level), and he'd be tons of fun. Pac-12 Media Day, already a great day, would be the highlight of my summer.

Miles would be a great hire for Maryland.

The greater question is who is LSU going to get to replace Miles?  Who is more accomplished than him?

Re: Les Miles? - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2015

I'd be pretty happy if SC hired Miles, to be honest.

He has zero ties to the West Coast and probably no Southern California recruiting network.

Sure!

Offensively, LSU hasn't been many great shakes, despite producing oodles of NFL talent. Miles hasn't really had a great bead on creating great offenses during his tenure.

The core of his success has been on the defensive end of the ball -- basically he hired John Chavis, who was a great defensive coordinator for him. Now, it's obviously an essential head coaching skill to hire a great staff, but the question is, what does Les Miles bring uniquely to the table that other coaches don't? And can he continue to find great coaches to serve under him if he himself has no particular, special aptitude. (Urban Meyer knows the spread-option; Harbaugh knows the power running game; Shaw, the same; Bill Snyder knows developing players, etc.)

Stylistically, I think Shaw more-or-less knows how to handle these pro-style teams.

This is not to say Les Miles would be a poor coach or that SC would be a poor team under him. In fact I bet he'd win a conference title or two, given enough time. But in the overall universe of coaches who might conceivably be available to SC, he's not the stuff of nightmares. (That's Chip Kelly.)

Re: Les Miles? - stupac2 - 11-23-2015

I remember reading recently that Odell Beckham and some other all-world NFL receiver were on LSU at the same time and weren't destroying everyone. LSU is either #1 or #2 in producing NFL talent. Why aren't they like Alabama, winning a championship every other year? Obviously Alabama is a big obstacle, but you'd think that would be like us and Oregon where they roughly trade winning, but they haven't lately. He seems like he's underachieved, despite having results that are clearly quite good.

Name a recent LSU QB.  Zach Mettenberger is the only one I can think of, and he's only been "meh".

Re: Les Miles? - Hank 91 - 11-23-2015

Thanks for this perspective. I don't watch much SEC football, so I only know the narrative spun by the media. One interesting thing -- if Miles were to take the SC job, would Orgeron come with him?

Re: Les Miles? - washingtonismoney - 11-23-2015

Well, the strange thing is that Miles has recruited many highly-touted QBs:

2014: Brandon Harris, #5 Dual-Threat QB, #99 overall player (rivals)
2013: Hayden Rettig, #3 Pro-style QB, #73 overall player
2012: Jeremy Liggins, #16 dual-threat QB
2011: Jerrard Randall,  #10 dual-threat QB, (four-star)

etc.

Name a recent Alabama QB. They still find ways to win.

Also, even if LSU having terrible QBs were an excuse, that's still on the HC. Why can't he recruit a competent QB? If AJ McCarron can lead Alabama to 3 NCs then you'd think Mettenberger (or whatever replacement-level guy they dredge up) could lead LSU to beat Alabama a few times. It's not like there's no OL or receiver talent.

I sure hope he doesn't get hired at Maryland.  I'm sure Miles will be expensive, and I just don't see him bringing in enough more revenue to justify the cost.  The market for college football in this area is too weak.  And the athletic department already loses way too much money.

That's an interesting question.

Wilner has a theory that any team that describes their offense as " -Raid" cannot beat Stanford under Shaw, but that the team struggles with teams that can slug away with them in the trenches.

I used to sort of believe this. Probably not now. It seems to have been based on 2012/2013.

Of course Stanford doesn't really play many pro-style teams. MSU qualifies.  UW (pre-2013), U$C, und, and Utah are probably more pro-style than anyone else we play (am I forgetting anyone?). Those teams have dominated our losses, particularly 2012-13.

Losses under Shaw were:
2011 - Oregon and Ok State
2012 - UW, und  (UW back then was still mostly pro-style)
2013 - Utah, U$C, Mich State
2014 - U$C, und, ASU, Oregon, Utah
2015 - Northwestern, Oregon

UnderArmour can cover up a lot of athletics department shortcomings.  They have a stated goal to do to Maryland what Nike did to Oregon.

I thought they just meant the ugly uniforms.  That's all they've done so far.  :P

More seriously, if Under Armour is going to cover the cost, great.  But I'll believe that when I see it.  And the school really can't afford to keep covering the athletic department's losses.
