No, not some drug induced event, the penalty. On one of the early scoring drives, McCaffery swept to the left and had a good opening with a chance to score. However, he stumbled and fell for a short gain. The replay clearly showed an ND player on the ground lift his leg and trip McCaffery. Do they call that anymore? Didn't like the ND DB shove Cajuste after his touchdown, either. Seemed the refs were letting things go early in the game. . . .

Good points. Should take a look at the 3rd down spot on Stanford's first drive. Clearly a yard short of the marker, but ruled first down. Oh, then there was that pass interference call that set up another Stanford touchdown. TV guys were stunned a penalty was called. Should I go on?

There was also a point, I think in the 1st quarter, when we had the ball, where a UDFG D lineman jumped across the LOS before the snap, clearly made contact with our player, I think it was Murphy, then jumped back into his stance,
but no penalty was called.

I saw that live too. When I went back and reviewed, I can see that it was an intent to trip, but it wasn't so flagrant that I felt that it was egregious that it was missed.
For those of us who have been around a handful of decades or more, we remember when measurements for first downs were common place. Now, they're much less frequent than chance would predict. I believe that officials are now instructed to place the ball so a measurement is almost always avoided. Usually that placement is in front of where I think the ball should go. Yesterday, there was a measurement for a ND first down (and first down was awarded). If you go back and look, the ball was probably just more than 10 yards from where the player was down and awarded the previous first down, but only about 9 yards in front of where the ball was snapped on that first down. In other words, the down markers were placed more accurately, but then the ball was placed on the field on one of the yard lines (as is their wont). I can't be sure whether the down markers were carefully placed or just were accidentally more accurate in this case. (I suspect the latter.)

Yes they do and it's a 15-yarder. But it's not an easy one to spot unless it's pretty blatant.

I thought most of the officiating balanced out pretty well. We got a gift PI call on the deep ball Cajuste couldn't hold on to, but the refs whiffed on the first encroachment by them, that trip on CMac, a few pretty obvious holding calls, and the final ND touchdown, though that worked out in our favor. On the whole though there was nothing too egregious where it seemed like the outcome depended more on the officiating then the game, which is pretty much all I hope for at this point.

That wasn't a gift. The DB had grabbed Cajuste's arm while the ball was in the air, then let go just before the ball got there. If you just see the very end of the play, it looks like there was no PI. But if you watch the whole play, it's an obvious PI call.
