WVB & WBB non-round-robin scheduling - M T - 11-29-2015

I hadn't noticed that the WVB scheduling had us with only one game each against the LA schools.  I really prefer the round-robin schedules we used to have, but I guess that's gone the way of the gold standard.  We miss the chance to avenge the loss to U.SC.

But I found it odd that the teams don't have any fewer trips by this.  We played U.SC in LA in Sep, and played UCLA in the Bay Area at the end of November.  Stanford, U.SC and U.CLA (and presumably K.al) are all still making the away trip.  They're just playing one less game on that trip.

On the week of those games, each of the teams play their rivals.  So in the week when U.SC came here, we played both U.SC and K.al.  This week, we traveled to U.CLA and K.al.

While that seems odd, at least it avoids the very ugly scheduling of two games against your rival in the same week as happens in WBB.

Anyone know of a reason that WVB and WBB chose different ways to schedule conference games against the rival and the extra teams?

Yes.  It has a lot to do with the number of non league games you are allowed to play.    The WVB coaches wanted to play a certain number of non league games so came down to the 20 league games.

WBB the same but they
wanted the 11-12 (depending on a tournament like we are playing now) non league games.

In summary coaches wanted the most possible non league games.  That could be fit in that is.

The WVB coaches voted on this presume the same for WBB

BobK, thank you for your response but it doesn't seem to address my question.  If I understand you correctly, you're explaining that we don't do a round-robin so we can play more out-of-conference opponents.  I agree that in both WBB & WVB, we play only one game against one pair of schools (at least this year, the pair (LA schools in the case of Stanford) are the same for both WBB & WVB).

The question is not the number of in-conference games, but how they are scheduled.  In WBB, we wind up playing our rival twice in a week, while taking a single trip to LA.  In WVB, we play the rival twice, in different weeks, but do take an extra trip to LA.

If anything, I'd think that WBB would have deeper pockets and could better afford the extra trip.  My question is, why the difference and what is the thinking that schedules both games against a rival to be in the same week?

Ok so the coaches wanted this isn't good enough.  Come to a chalk talk and ask. 😄
