Re: An update on the Pac-12 Network - OutsiderFan - 12-01-2015

On-demand over Internet will solve all the problems the conference has with distribution and revenue.

Given the SEC and B1G must share 50% of their profits with ESPN/FOX, they have 14 schools to split revenue amongst, and cord cutters are killing the cable business model, the Pac-12 is in a much better strategic position than those two conferences as soon as it offers online-only access.

Nobody in New York gives a rat's hiney about Rutgers, so good luck replacing all that guaranteed carriage revenue from cable with on-demand buyers of the B1G network in New York that drove Rutgers into the B1G in the first place.

I feel as though the Pac 12 should lead the way in athletics and innovation. Why isn't there a way for the conference to create a streaming subscription channel, say $9.95/month?

Re: An update on the Pac-12 Network - needle - 12-01-2015

Maybe this is off-topic, but do Netflix or Amazon Prime have any streaming sports? I wonder if they ever think about adding that to their business model--and, if so, would a partnership with the Pac-12 Networks be something feasible.

Re: An update on the Pac-12 Network - OutsiderFan - 12-01-2015

Not having access to the Pac-12 network contracts with their TV distribution partners, I can't say for certain, but it seems you could be fairly confident assuming those contracts prohibit the conference from doing its own online streaming that would bypass the need to have cable or satellite subscriptions.  I can't imagine the conference agreed to such a moratorium indefinitely, but I'm guessing it had to be for several years at least, or else why wouldn't they offer an online subscription?

The real interesting data to know would be how many subscribers the TV partners have strictly because they carry the P-12N.  I doubt it's all that many, and I am confident the number of subscribers would be greater if it was available online on demand.  And if not greater, at least more revenue would be generated, because the Pac-12 isn't getting $9/month per cable subscriber out of its carriage deals.  It would have to get probably four (4) TV subscribers for every one online subscriber to bring in more revenue from TV deals than online subscriptions.  It's hard to imagine online wouldn't be a better way to go at this point.

But again, it all comes down to the contracts. There is no way the Pac-12 is going to make all their TV partners equity partners because that would share too much revenue with them for the schools to increase the size of their pie pieces.

PAC 12 International is available in select non US markets via subscription to its  YouTube channel. Has been around for the last two seasons. I would assume their current distribution agreements prevent them from doing the same in the US

I think the best they could do is offer a steaming version in areas without an option to get the network.  Of course, since I think you can get DISH anywhere, I guess that won't help.  Of course, that also means people who complain that can't get pac-12 network are actually complaining that they don't care enough about the Pac-12 to switch to DISH...

Re: An update on the Pac-12 Network - yvonne - 12-01-2015

DISH now offers SlingTV streaming. ESPN's various networks are part of this service. I wonder whether the Pac-12 network's DISH contract could add SlingTV service. I would love that because I currently have no TV service, and am thinking about keeping the cord cut when I replace my TV later this week.

Every geographic area can get DISH, but that doesn't mean every household can.  Those of us who live in high-rise apartment buildings, for example, are largely out of luck (unless the building owner decides to put a dish on the roof and distribute the signal to all the tenants).

Peak ESPN was in 2013.  Subscriber numbers have been in a free-fall since then, going from 99 million to 92 million in just two years.

The future of distribution will not necessarily include cable companies.

The loss of 7% of subscribers in just two years suggests the future is closer than it appears.  And keep in mind that's ESPN, the one network pundits predicted would be immune from cord cutting because you can't substitute for live sports.

I don't think this is off-topic at all. I was thinking the same thing. With the advent of smart TVs and various streaming devices which can connect to your living room TV, a service like Netflix or Prime or Hulu would be ideal. Personally, I'd pay as much as $19.95 per game without hesitation. Sixty bucks for the handful of games that don't end up on network TV? I'd call that a bargain.

I'd dig my longhorn network more if we had beaten Kalifornia.

Sign me up!  (Hank, let's say this happens and prices go the way of, say, heavy-weight title bouts; how much would you pay for the ND game?  CCG?  NC Semi-final?  NCG?  Not questioning your loyalties, I have my own answers in mind.  Just curious what others would pay.)

Re: An update on the Pac-12 Network - Rally - 12-01-2015

I guess what pisses me off the most is knowing I am paying for the SEC and Big10 networks.  I am sick of being pitched for 1991 Alabama-Auburn, 1983 Ohio State-Michigan, etc.  or whatever.
