WVB: NCAA Rd 1: Stanford: 3 New Mexico State 0 -
M T - 12-04-2015
All: Friday night, 7PM, will be the last time for this great group of Stanford WVB Seniors to play at Maples. Let's see if we can get a good group of fans there to see them off on their NCAA streak. At $15($10) for entry, it will probably be cheaper than the cab fare from the gate back to your car on Saturday.
In front of a small (1000) Thursday night crowd, the #6-ranked, #8-seeded Cardinal started a little slow against their NCAA round 1 opponent, New Mexico State. Stanford had trouble with NMSU's serve and made some errors early. But once Stanford figured them out, they rolled to a win. 25-20, 25-13, 25-17. For the match, Stanford hit .415, compared to NMSU's .133.
Lutz (13K), Hodson (13K), and Howard (12K) combined for 35 of Stanford's 45 kills, with the ball well spread around by Bugg. I thought Burgess did a good job of receiving most of the serves. Stanford had 8 blocks.
NMSU did a good job, esp. with their serves. They dug the ball quite well, but just couldn't match up to the Stanford stars. This was the first time they were swept all season.
In the areas to improve, Bugg missed all 3 kill attempts. Two were deflected at the net and handled easily, while her third attempt went well wide of the side line. Hodson had 4 service errors to single ace.
I didn't see the earlier game, but unseeded Loyola-Marymount Univ. upset #13 seed Colorado State. Stanford will be playing LMU on Friday night at 7PM.
For those that can't come to the game, there is no TV, but there will be a live feed.
Only about 1/4 of the first round games were played on Thursday, with Colorado State being the only seed to fall. USC won their match 3-1. Unseeded ASU and Oregon lost their matches.
