an alternate universe - TrumpCard - 12-09-2015

Can you imagine the state of Stanford football today if, in 2012, Shaw had given the reins to Nottingham instead of Hogan, and Hogan transferred?  Perish the thought.

Was there any remotely plausible chance of that happening? If Nottingham couldn't beat out Nunes, then why would he beat out Hogan?

Well, he was 2nd on the depth chart.

At the beginning of the year, but it seems odd to me to posit that Shaw would decide that Nottingham should take over, since he had played in 0 snaps (IIRC, anyway).

Re: an alternate universe - TrumpCard - 12-09-2015

I highly doubt Shaw actually was thinking of doing that, but there were a lot of armchair quarterbacks who wanted Nottingham to start.

I was pointing out that, for whatever reason, he started the season as the official backup.

Did people want Nottingham in particular, or just not Nunes?

Re: an alternate universe - CompSci87 - 12-09-2015

Nottingham had looked slightly better than Nunes in the Spring Game, and he had a cool potential nickname ("the Sheriff"). One or both of those were perhaps the reason for the sizable fan contingent who thought he should have been chosen as starter from the beginning as well as wanting him to replace Nunes.

We'd potentially be working on our second National Championship if Shaw had allowed Lloyd to qb a triple option featuring Sanders and C-Mac last year and adding Love this year.

I don't think it would have made much of a difference outside of the 2012 season.  Nottingham has proven since that he wasn't good enough to hold onto the job.  My guess is he would have lasted no more than 3 or 4 games and Hogan then would have been the starter and Nottingham would have transferred after the season.

So no RB13 but after that I don't see that much would have happened differently

What if...what if Taysom Hill hadn't reneged on his commitment to Stanford?

...and was injury-free while here.  The poor guy had awful luck that way.  I think I read he is on course to graduate this year - I wonder if he's eligible to play another year, and if so, whether he'd stay at BYU or transfer elsewhere.

Re: an alternate universe - teejers1 - 12-10-2015

Yeah, well, what if Emeka Okafor had waited a bit longer for the Jason Collins scholie to open up and come to Stanford?  In my lifetime, that's the biggest 'one that got away' from a major Stanford sports perspective.
