Projecting the 2016 Offense - amartinsu13 - 01-08-2016

I got excited reading OutsideFan's 2016 depth chart projections for defense, so here's my stab at the offense.  Debate away - what did I miss?

Here's Drukarev redshirt review: https://stanford.n.rivals.com/news/redshirt-review-offense

QB  Chyrst - Burns - Costello (rs?)
RB  McCaffrey - Love - Scarlett - (Robertson?) - Speights (rs) - Bisharat (rs) - Stephens (rs)
FB  Marx - Harrell - Williams
WR  Arcega-Whiteside - Brandt-Sims
WR  Owusu - Irwin
Slot  Irwin - Tyler - (Robertson?)
TE  Schultz - Smith
TE  Taboada - Smith
LT  Tucker
LG  Fanaika
C    Shuler
RG  Caspers
RT  Bright
Ogre  Wilson

KR McC - Love/(Robertson)
PR McC - Love/(Robertson)

I feel like you gotta find ways to get a guy like Robertson the ball (if we land him).  I could see him in wildcat packages like Love was this year - acting like the decoy, sometimes getting the ball.  Wildcat would sure be special next year with McC/Love/Robertson.

That would be a really good offense ... if we could put those 14 guys on the field together.

More or less that seems to be the current pecking order.

A few other notes:

- I suspect we'll see Owusu and Irwin listed at #1 on the depth chart at WR positions at first. If Arcega-Whiteside (we'll need a shortened version here) gets to #1, I would then guess it would more likely be at the expense of Owusu. It looks to me as if Irwin has already moved ahead.

- I thought I read on this board that Smith has had a very serious, double ligament injury to his knee and is undergoing surgery about now. If so, that would seem to make him a redshirt candidate for next year.
Here is a journal from Smith noting an unspecified knee injury (and a C grade during the fall).
http://usatodayhss.com/2015/under-armour-all-america-diary-sidelined-with-injury-kaden-smith-enjoying-the-experience

- Love and McCaffrey will be on the field together a reasonable amount of time. They were a bit during the latter parts of this year.

- I had heard that the current plan was to keep Tucker at RT and Bright at LT, but at this point I don't remember where I heard that or whether it was at all reliable.

- I don't think we've usually had a designated slot receiver. We rotate a lot of guys there depending on formations and plays, including guys listed as RBs, TEs, and WRs.

Re: Projecting the 2016 Offense - fullmetal - 01-08-2016

Looks great on paper.  Is this the year where Stanford wins all its games in shootouts because the offense scores too quickly and the defense tires out a bit? :)

No.

Relative to 2015, I think the defense is more likely to improve than the offense.

Reasons:
D has more room to improve
secondary should take a big step forward
LBers seem to have solid depth
New QB is always worrisome
WR quality/depth is iffy
Two best OL are gone

Re: Projecting the 2016 Offense - OutsiderFan - 01-09-2016

As mentioned in another thread,  my guess is Harrell moves back to TE. You want more than 2 TEs and you don't need more than 2 FBs.  Stanford will have Marx and Williams there, which is plenty.

Here's what I know about Owusu:  He is really good at catching the football, has pretty good speed, is big, and can leap.  What I don't know about is his route running skills.  That's the only thing that would hold him back from being a very good WR.  Tough to tell watching games on TV how good a route runner someone is (Irwin has made it abundantly clear in his scouting reports and when he left that Oregon CB undressed on the field in November and a stop and go route).  Given all the positive attributes Owusu has, that's my only conclusion as to why he hasn't caught more passes.  Don't see any reason Owusu can't be as productive as Cajuste based purely on physical ability.

JJAW = Arcega-Whiteside.

My WR pecking order:

1. Irwin
2. Owusu
3. JJAW
4. Jordan
5. IBS

Demetris Robertson and Donald Stewart would be #4 & #5 for starters.

I really am wondering why so many are looking at Demetris Robertson as a RB and not WR.  ND is pitching him on being the next Will Fuller for crying out loud, and Stanford has a much bigger need at WR than ND.

I agree with the above with the addition that Love (a lot) and McAffrey and (some) will both get snaps at slot receiver and even wide receiver, particularly if Scarlett plays well. (I'm hoping Cameron is ready to assume Remound's role at the very least.)

My guess would be people see Stanford as more a running back centered team than they do a WR centered one, and they feel he wouldn't get enough touches as a WR.

Re: Projecting the 2016 Offense - OutsiderFan - 01-09-2016

If you have an athlete like Robertson, you get him the ball as a WR.  Stanford hasn't had a WR like Robertson in my memory.  He's also playing WR at the Army game today.

I think Schultz and Taboada will be good for us. If they stay healthy, we will be fine. If one of them gets hurt, we will need to consider other options, the most obvious being Cotton and Harrell (if he returns for a 5th year).

We have a walk-on freshman TE who is redshirting this year, Ben Snyder. He was all-state in Nevada. I haven't heard whether he is a realistic option as the #3 TE.

The coaches seem to think Jay Tyler has some ability. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get on the field.

Re: Projecting the 2016 Offense - Hulk01 - 01-09-2016

Big agreement that we are good at TE.  Only at Stanford do fans worry about the possible lack of a third, excellent tight end.

Mac, Irwin, Schutz, A-W, Love, and Taboada give us some great receiving possibilities, and it's a good bet that a sixth solid option emerges.  And very good red zone receiving options, too, with A-W and Taboada.

Stanford is not recruiting Robertson as a RB. No schools are. He also weighs 175 lbs right now.

Re: Projecting the 2016 Offense - OutsiderFan - 01-09-2016

My WR list was for SE/FL not so much slot receivers.

I'm going to guess Tyler's quickness and speed gets him on the field for a good amount of reps as a slot receiver in 2016.

Umm Rector and C.Owusu?

No.  Robertson is on a different level.

I don't think Stewart will redshirt.

Re: Projecting the 2016 Offense - OutsiderFan - 01-17-2016

Looking strictly at backs and receivers, it seems we will see something like...

TE: Schultz - Taboada - Harrell
WR: Rector - Owusu - Irwin - JJAW - Love - Tyler - Stewart
RB: CMac - Scarlett - Love - Speights
FB: Marx - Williams - McElwain

It looks like Bryce Love has the potential to continue playing both RB and slot WR.  Will be interesting to see what size and strength gains he makes this offseason.
