Let's say "Chip to college in 2018." Kind of surprising he'd move from one vaguely dysfunctional location to one very dysfunctional one. Can't see Kelly succeeding there independent of his qualities as a coach (which, I think, are strong).

Wow. Must say, this hire will breath serious life into the Niners fan base. It also creates a real opportunity for CK to revive his career as a QB.Â

So he's behavior of hating the players in Philly makes this a good thing?

I am surprised. Just this morning the Merc was touting Shanahan as the choice of the old greats Montana, Young, etc. One hour ago ESPN said it was coming down to a choice between Shanahan and Kelly, and the dysfunctional Niners could not even get that choice right. This choice certainly won't fire up this fan. I imagine Shanahan would have demanded too much control for the Niners to handle, while damaged-goods Kelly was willing to agree to a properly subordinate role.

Kaep. And Kaep would be due $12 mil if he's on the roster beyond April 1st, I think, so the hire of Kelly doubles down on resuscitating Colin Kaepernick's career. I can't imagine Blaine Gabbert doing anything in Kelly's system...

This is such a baffling move on both sides. What on earth makes Baalke think he'll be able to stand Kelly for more than a couple months? Why didn't Kelly go to Tennessee? I don't get it.
But being forced to watch Niners games every Sunday just got more rewarding.

Gabbert's actually pretty athletic, so he'd probably be decent at the zone read. His problem was always feeling the rush.

I kind of understand it. They've blown through two coaches, one terrific, one terrible. But the team's talent has gone south in a
hurry. If I'm Chip Kelly, I'm thinking that this isn't the year that Chip is on the hot seat. This is the year that
Baalke is on the hot seat. He did well in the draft through 2011 (AJ Jenkins notwithstanding), completely whiffed in 2012, and has had three mediocre years since, at least in terms of players who stuck on the roster. So Chip might be thinking "2016 is likely to be a stinky year, and if I don't overrely on rookies, I may be in the catbird seat when Trent gets fired in December, 2016."Â
A separate item of which I'm curious is his staff. Who will he bring with him? Everyone? Will he keep Mangenious?

Ah, when grammar goes rogue. That, or someone was really, really upset at the Chip Kelly hire.
I'm waiting to see what CowboyIndian does with the fact that the man jumped to his death and landed in a cemetery.

I thought it was describing Kelly's predicament, similar to jumping from the frying pan and into the fire.

Price is right though at $14 million for the two QBs
Re: Chip to Niners -

Actually think it was about a good a hire as the 'Niners could have made under the circumstances.
First, the 'Niners need an offense. It's one thing to lose; quite another to lose AND be boring (see Buddy and Wlat). The 'Niners will not be boring.
Second, I agree that this style of offense suits both Kaep and Gabbert. It may be a tough sell offense long-term, but these QBs ought to be able to run it well. And Kaep is a freak athletic talent (still) - give him a simplified offense and see what he can do with it. Has to be at least a ray of hope for him.
Third, I flat reject any accusations or implications that Chip Kelley is a racist. You just can't be that and coach in the NFL (or anywhere else, frankly), and you never heard such accusations at Oregon, where there were plenty of AA players. I attribute all that nonsense to disgruntled players who didn't like being sent away from Philly. As Ertz said in a recent interview: "I don't need to be buddy-buddy with my coach. I just need him to help me play better and win" (or words to that effect). The Chipster may have the social graces of a box of tacks, but I highly doubt he is racist in the slightest.
Fourth, who was left for the 'Niners to hire? Hue Jackson opted for Cleveland and Shanahan - in addition to being a bit long in the tooth - did not have a very good record in his last several seasons as a head coach. It just didn't seem like there was much to choose from.
We'll see. I don't much care about the NFL, even the 'Niners. But this hire certainly makes things more interesting.
P.S. I view a clash between Chip and Baalke as a good thing, as I have little faith in the GM these days. Still, even Chipster's prickly personality probably comes nowhere near Harbs on the "I really dislike working with this guy" scale.
Re: Chip to Niners -
Leftcoast - 01-15-2016
I thought the 49ers might have gone with Coughlin. Good guy, always competitive teams and a couple of SB wins in his trophy case. Say what you will about the Giants but they were always competitive and fundamentally sound plus he is very respected in NFL front offices and could assemble a competent staff. The 49ers roster (particularly at QB) doesn't match Coughlin's scheme and, more to the point, the fit with GM Baalke could have been problematic.
How high is Chip's stock with other NFL ready coaches? I worry that his system doesn't have enough NFL credibility for him to recruit a quality staff. Would any hot shot coordinator hitch their wagon to the Chipster?

After a thorough search...of people no other NFL team was even willing to interview.
Over under is 31.5 games, and I'm taking the under.

Chip's in the driver's seat. Baalke had a number of good to great drafts pre-2012, then laid a gigantic egg in 2012...no one is left, and less than the average are left from 2013, 2014 and 2015. Baalke is on the hot seat now. They may push Paraag to the side, they may fire the assistants, but I think Chip Kelly is rock-solid for at least three years, and all four if he wins 8 or more his first two years. They are $39 mms. under the cap, $44 mms. if they get rid of the right two guys, that's the fourth most in the LEAGUE. If they work a trade to help Saints, Dolphins or Bills with their salary cap issues, they could add players or draft picks. They have all of their own seven picks (including the #7 overall pick) and the Chargers' fifth round pick, along with the Cowboys' seventh round pick and up to three more compensatory picks. They'll have two selections in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds. they have three more picks than any other team in the NFL, and cap space to get $44 million worth of free agents.
But all that is up to Baalke. This is his year. If he doesn't put the stud players on the field, people will blame him. Chip has a lot more rope than Baalke. I wonder how the interaction between Baalke and Chip will go?

Why will this breathe life into the fan base?
- Still have the same bonehead, immature CEO
- Still have the same overblown scout as a GM, with an ego bigger than Harbaugh
- Still have holes all over the lineup
- Still among the teams of last resort for free agents

Well, hang on a sec. The Niners have 12 draft picks, 3 more than any other team in the league. Depending on the moves they make between now and opening day, they will have between $39 mms. and $44 million to play with in free agent money. Chip Kelly turned Nick Foles into a 27 TD/2 INT QB...what do you think he could do with Kaepernick?
I don't know that I buy every one of your claims. They were 5-11 last year after losing 17 starters, 9 on defense. the Niners were last in the league in offense by a LONG way, 238 points, next fewest was 275. they were 18th of 32 teams on defense, after filling 9 holes. I'm thinking this could be a good year for the 49ers, although I think 2017 will be a better one.
