The source article at SI's Campus Rush is much better and more detailed:

I'm not sure why this is depressing? Bosa says he doesn't like the spotlight, so he took steps to avoid it. Seems like a rare public instance of a star college athlete exercising good judgement.

I said it was depressing because I think it's ashame that he cant benefit from the full college experience because of the spotlight. I contrasted that with the recent letter from Remound Wright in which he talks about how broadening he found his college experience. I guess if the alternative is getting in trouble, it's better that he is off by himself. But to me it's a sign of how the football experience at some schools can really detract from the college experience. And as it looks like he is about to turn pro, I hope he can handle the spotlight that comes with that. In a more perfect world maybe his football coaches would have helped him more in dealing with the spotlight, so he was more prepared for the NFL, and could have a broader college experience.
Note, for some reason I couldnt pull up the article you linked to, but thanks for attaching it. Maybe it sheds more light on the issue that I wasnt aware of.

College, or a traditional liberal education befitting that setting, shouldn't be reduced to a vocational school. You could say that the commercialization of college football has driven most of Bosa's decisions to rethink his life after the suspension. I think he'll be able to do the same with his pro career--we've been hearing more stories of NFL players who aren't living outlandishly in the spotlight, so Bosa could be one of them too, just a guy making a living on his own terms. But that's not what college is for.
