Today in Bear-y attrition: Coaching edition - ahuang06 - 01-22-2016

Just saw that Tony Franklin (Offensive Coordinator for the Bears) is taking a job at Middle Tennessee...as OC! He'd worked with Dykes since 2010 (at La. Tech.) Apparently for family reasons.

Is it attrition or addition by subtraction.  I haven't been too impressed with the bear raid.

I suspect neither.  This is an en bloc excision of their entire offense.  They lost their QB as well as their whole slew of wide receivers.  They'll be rebuilding from ground up.

Then again, to leave a Pac-12 school to go to ... MTSU! ... in the same position is not a lateral move.  This is hardly a PR coup for the B.ears.

No inside info, but I'd be willing to bet Franklin was strongly encouraged *wink, wink* to look for other jobs. You don't voluntarily make that type of move.

That's an interesting question.

Usually with this sort of thing (moving to an equivalent position at a lesser program), it's a kind, help the guy out, firing. In this case, that doesn't seem to be the case. Franklin has a long term relationship with Dykes, seems to get credit for developing Goff (which did go well), and in general I think c.a.l. still feels that their offense was good and defense was a problem.

I don't know how to weigh that he was also recently reported as interviewing for the Texas OC. Normally that would be seen as a promotion, certainly in salary, though Texas offense has not been good lately. But it's not clear whether that implies anything about the security of his status at c.a.l..

perhaps a cost of living issue?

Last year, Middle Tennessee's offensive coordinator made $180,000. Franklin made $507,000 at C.al.

Ah, now I see the bootprint on his butt.

Wonder how good their new OC is going to be.  Hope the kal OL continues to give away sacks like a grocery store checkout line.

Even grocery stores don't give away sacks anymore. 10 cents is the going rate here.

I'm sure we'd be glad to pay kal's line a couple of bucks per game to cover the cost, though.

You're a little behind on the c.a.l. OL.
c.a.l. gave up sacks on 4.9% of attempts.
Stanford gave up sacks on 6.3% of attempts.

The news gets weirder.  Folsom HS has been super successful led by co coach and offensive coordinator Troy Taylor.  Yesterday Taylor, who was a star QB at cal became the co offensive coordinator for Eastern Washington.

It's an insult to Low APR U.  He sees going from an 8-5 Pac-12 team to a 7-6 C-USA team as a step up.  Either that or Yikes told him to go find another job so he doesn't have to fire him.

Here's the official UC Berkeley Athletics statement.

Here are some interesting parts from the Franklin statement.

Quote:I wanted this to be the final stop of my coaching career which began in 1979 and has enjoyed parts of five decades. However, it wasn’t meant to be.

Quote:When Laura and I made this decision to leave Cal and move back closer to our family we were very fortunate to have an opportunity arise soon after. The new opportunity allowed me to continue to coach football as well as have a closer relationship with our parents, children and grandchildren. I am grateful to head coach Rick Stockstill and Middle Tennessee State University for welcoming me back as the offensive coordinator for the Blue Raiders. In 2009 we worked together to win a MTSU Division I record 10 games and I’m certain we can work together to better that this go around.

Lose to Bellarmine, get banished to Eastern Washington.  Go Bells.

It won't matter.  Even Julia Child couldn't make a gourmet meal with rancid beef.
