Re: Zach Ertz gets paid - ColoradoTree - 01-25-2016

Good for him!  This recent period of Stanford football greatness has certainly muddied my NFL fandom waters.  I've always been a Broncos and Vikings fan, but I found myself rooting for Andrew/Coby et al. to beat the Broncos in last year's playoffs, and I stood up and cheered for Zach when he scored a TD against the Vikings his rookie year.  My disappointment at the Broncos losing the Super Bowl to the Seahawks was tempered by real pleasure at seeing Sherman and Baldwin get a ring.

I've had some fellow NFL fans chide me for disloyalty in this way, but I view it as being even more loyal to the people that have brought me joy as a Stanford football fan.  If I were to stop rooting for Andrew Luck just because he went to a different team than the one I've grown up rooting for, wouldn't that be a worse betrayal than rooting for him to beat the Broncos in one game?

The one constant, of course, has been dislike for the Patriots and the Packers.  (Ty Montgomery's presence on the GB roster wasn't enough to overcome years of revulsion toward that team, but I still smiled at his successes.)  But I shudder to think what I'll do when New England inevitably drafts Christian McCaffrey and adjusts their schemes to make him a star.  I'm sure my Stanford fandom will win out, but it makes for strange bedfellows.  How could I possibly root against Christian in the NFL?

My stomach just sank reading this. This thought likely just ruined my day.

Please please please let the Dolphins somehow draft him, then at least some great garvin griping will be in store for us.

I know, it's a dark thought.  But doesn't it just feel inevitable?  I'm holding out a sliver of hope that John Elway figures out a way to land him in Denver.  The way the Mile High crowd roared when Christian got put up on the jumbotron?  Let's figure out a way to make that permanent, #7!

Let's hope Christian gets drafted high enough that the Patriots (who will always be late in the first round, having finished high in the standings -- yuck, but that's the way it seems to go) won't have a chance at him...

If it can't be Denver, then perhaps Indianapolis, where he and Andrew can make us dream for what might have been if Christian had been just a few years older.  ;)

Red and Gold.  Niners.  Now starting, Christian McCaffrey at all-everything.  After all, Dad played here for a year...

Re: Zach Ertz gets paid - BostonCard - 01-25-2016

Would be interesting to see how Chip would use McCaffrey.  I'm still not sure how #WildCaff would do in the NFL, which is by no means an indictment on McCaffrey, but a comment on how unpredictable the transition from college to the NFL is for running backs.  I'd have to believe that he would at least have a future as a returner and third down back and feel he could succeed as an every down back; I'm just a lot less confident in it than I was of Luck or Ertz or DeCastro.

You think Chip will last two years with the Niners? ;)

I think he will last at least three, the length of Tomsula's contract.  they will have lots of new pieces within six months, it will take time to gel.  I don't think Jed minds paying one ex-coach, but two might be a little too much.

And he gets the girl.  Julie Johnston of the Chicago Red Stars, graduate of Santa Clara U, member of the US team that won the 2015 FIFA World Championship.  They met at a Stanford baseball game.

So in about 20 years or so will we have another CMac type product of a Stanford pass catcher and a top notch soccer player.  One can hope.

Good for Zach...I've been happy with my SCU bride of 29 years, best wishes to him and Julie.
