OT: FSU and Jameis Winston -

Florida State has settled a federal Title IX lawsuit with Erica Kinsman, a former student who said she was raped by quarterback Jameis Winston in 2012.
FSU agreed to pay Kinsman $950,000 an amount that includes attorneys fees as well as make a five-year commitment to awareness, prevention and training programs.
FSU did not admit to liability in the settlement, which university president John Thrasher said the school agreed to in order to avoid additional litigation expenses.

Yes. Sometimes there is such a thing as being lucky someone didn't commit.

Winston could have been a much better person at Stanford than he was at FSU. I hope that would have been the case, but we will never know.

One thing is for sure -- shopkeepers would have to keep a very close eye on him if he were ever at Fisherman's Wharf....

Just a reminder of the H.eisman Trophy standard....
"The H.eisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity."
After recent winners like Winston, Manziel, Bush, Newton I think they should just be honest and delete the integrity aspect. It's ok to just award it to the best player ( if they could even get that right). And someone can create a new award that takes integrity into account.
Since he isnt retired I dont think we could name it after Coach Shaw, but I'm sure we could come up with another honoree. Pat Tillman?

I agree with this. I think the culture of our program is drastically different from that at FSU. Some of his baser impulses might have been channeled a little more appropriately at Stanford, whereas he was akin to a god in Tallahassee. And yes, we'll never know, but I think the environment at Stanford would have helped produce a different outcome for him, from a behavioral and maturity standpoint.Â

ESPN reported on this that as the case went on, more and more was coming out negatively about FSU and that is why they settled, not because of the cost from the case - but the potential fallout and cost to the university from that fallout.
She is still pursuing a lawsuit against Jameis Winston and he has counter-sued her for defamation. Sounds like a Lance Armstrong tactic.

Interesting...

(Not that the attorneys representing Kinsman don't have their own reasons to spin the attorneys fees down, but still, interesting)
Quote:Daniel Wallach, a Florida-based attorney, said its not unusual for settlements to include language that a lump-sum amount includes attorneys fees. Saying more is allocated to attorneys fees than damages can help further a narrative that a defendant is settling a lawsuit to avoid additional litigation expenses, he said.
