I'm happy for Agu's family that at least they can get something out of this

But I suspect that just like the State Dept after Benghazi, nobody is going to get fired.

Here's Brennan Scarlett's statement shortly after Ted's http://www.dailycal.org/2015/02/06/remembering-ted-agu-2/

Poignant I'm sure.

Didn't we have a player medically retire ten or so years ago due to complications of sickle cell trait?

Big difference.  That man is still alive.  Nice ding to C.al's recruiting pitch to mom and dad.  I don't mean to be disrespectful.  This is sad anyway you look at it.

I wasn't trying to make any implications.  I just remember us taking an offensive lineman (I think) who had sickle cell trait and had to retire.

I know.  No offense intended.

Yes. It was an OG--Michigan transfer.

Yes, Jeff Zuttah. He was from New Jersey orginally, then attended Michigan. As I recall, he transferred to Stanford with the idea that the climate here might help him better manage his condition. It didn't work out for him to play football and he retired. He got his degree from Stanford.

Re: UCB admits liability in 2014 death of football player - BostonCard - 01-31-2016

Thanks Terry, great memory.  Didn't he suffer a complication from sickling that forced him to retire?  For some reason I associate him with a splenic infarct that finally forced him to retire for good.  Also, my recollection is that he may have had more than just sickle cel trait, maybe SC disease (a mix whete one of the beta hemoglobin genes has the sickle cell mutation and the other one has the beta thallasemia mutation).  It produces a slightly less severe disease than sickle cell anemia (both copies of the sickle cell gene), but its's definitely more severe than sickle cell trait.  For some reason I remember being surprised that he would have been able to play football, which wouldn't have been the case with sickle cell trait.

Any idea of what became of him post football?  Even though the transfer didn't work out for him from a football perspective, im happy he got his degree and is hopefully enjoying the benefits of a 40-year decision.

Wow, nice resume. Great example of the 40 year decision.

I don't remember Zuttah's medical details (or never knew them). My memory is that his condition was less severe than full blown sickle cell, and he thought he might be able to play with proper management, but ultimately he was medically unable to continue with football. I don't know whether there was a specific incident that caused him to retire.

Re: UCB admits liability in 2014 death of football player - BostonCard - 01-31-2016

Looking it up, I found several articles that describe his condition as sickle cell anemia, but based on his relatively mild course, I think he probably had sickle cell disease (but not sickle cell anemia proper) [quick summary: sickle cell anemia = two copies of the sickle cell globin gene (HbS), while sickle cell disease also includes people who have one copy of HbS and one copy of the hemoglobin gene with a different mutation and can be milder].

http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/sickle-cell-disease

My guess is that Zuttah had either SC disease or sickle cell/beta thallasemia.

As for what caused him to retire, I found this:

Quote:Reserve offensive lineman Jeff Zuttah will not play again this season. He has been sidelined by medical conditions related to sickle cell anemia, a disease he was diagnosed with as a child.

Also, found this old article from Mike Eubanks (behind a paywall, though):

Is this really an appropriate topic for discussion?  Exactly why is it our business what problem he had?  Just prurient?

I don't enjoy it. Sometimes, I wonder how much that site represents your average UCB fan, or even your average die-hard. It seems pretty extreme; nevertheless, they did ban Blueblood, the fan I most remember for rejoicing at the horse collar that ended Mike Mitchell's career.

The wifeisaf*rd character in that thread is a real piece of work, and a few seem to agree with him that the article is somehow a hit piece designed to harm UC Berkeley football. However, there is [url=http://bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?99179-Ted-Agu-follow-up&p=842642006&viewfull=1#post842642006]this very insightful post from the parent of a former walk-on.

I agree with Yvonne.  The focus should be on "how do we ensure that this never happens again" not "how is this going to make us look"
