Denver Broncos exec John Elway returns to Stanford, but wasn’t sure if he will be able to reach any of his old haunts during Super Bowl week.

I found it pretty amusing.

I thought the actual name is "Rosotti's Alpine Inn". Is that wrong?

Yep. It was a rugby hangout when I was in school ('99-'03), and we always referred to it as Zot's.

It was Zots in the 80s too

I'm not saying it's not Zot's (it was so in the 60s, as well, kids) but that big sign in front does say "Alpine Inn".

I don't think any of us is old enough to have visited it while it was still officially "Rossotti's"

I remember when entering as a CS grad student in 1981 the department gave me a list of campus slang terms, and calling the Alpine Inn "Zot's" was on the list. I think UGLY for the undergraduate library was there too. Anyway, it seems like calling it Zot's is one of those traditions that is handed down over the years for no better reason than that it's a longstanding tradition.

Re: OT: Mark Purdy on Elway's return to campus - JJJ - 02-03-2016

I seem to remember it as "Zott's" (with the double-T, like the paloaltoonline article), probably based on the one time I ever saw it written somewhere sometime long ago (mid-80s). It was always called that, but not often written, in my recollection.

Re: OT: Mark Purdy on Elway's return to campus - teejers1 - 02-03-2016

I just remember it morphed into a verb, as in "we got Zotted last night."  (Meaning we were over-served, as often occurred at Zott's while doing "gallon club.").
Ah . . . to be young and stupid.  (Sure beats being old and stupid!).

Over 165 years, the place has had a lot of names. Since 1956, the name has been "Alpine Inn Beer Garden." However, for some reason, the name of the owner for the first 23 years following prohibition has stuck.

Thank you for the Cliff Notes version of Robbie's post. I was having trouble keeping track of all the different eras!  8)
