WBB: Stats--Last year vs. This year - 81alum - 02-04-2016

Category/Last year/This year

Scoring Offense ranking / 71 / 132
Scoring Defense ranking / 92 / 14
FG% ranking / 39 / 103
3 pt % ranking / 9 / 34
A/T ratio ranking / 154 / 97

So our defense got better and our offense got worse.  We knew that.  Our shooting got a lot worse.  Surprisingly the Assist/Turnover ratio improved--that one confused me given that we lost Amber.

Good catch!

Believe it or not, the number of turnovers is way down.
Year over year, the change in Assists minus TO for our most frequent players:
Lili: +8
Bri: +38
Brittany: -8
Karlie: +20
Kaylee: +34
Erica: +7
Kailee: +17

Fascinating.  Interesting to compare the A/TO of Kaylee and Erica.  You normally expect "bigs" to have some turnovers in the paint, but Bird has very, very few assists, while Kaylee has quite a few--and considering her limited playing time the disparity is even greater.  I presume this is because Erica plays the 5 and Kaylee the 4, which gives Kaylee many more opportunities to pass.

Bri is the one that catches your eye--that is a pretty dramatic improvement for her, but Karlie is doing better as well.  The chart also makes sense out of Alanna's challenge, especially when you look at how Taylor was doing in a similar role last year.  Alanna's turnovers are not great, of course, but they are not astronomical compared with Taylor's.  It is the small number of assists that jumps out.  I wonder if there is something the coaches could do to help Alanna be a more productive passer.  Given that she can shoot the three and that she is 6'3", she seems like the ideal player to take on a Ruef-like role and be a tall ball distributor from the high post or the perimeter.  But to do that, of course, she needs to make crisp, accurate passes to open players.  That is something that Taylor could do.  All that pertains to Brittany, too, except for the high post, probably.  Although Tempie mentioned at the last chalk take that Britt played at the 4 for a stretch in the first half of the WSU game.

This also makes me appreciate just how quietly Amber lead our team last year. Because she wasn't vocal and not especially dominant as a shooter, I think her contributions in terms of ball handling, offensive leadership, and monstrous A/T ratio went under-appreciated (at least by me!). I've been more used to us having shooting guards in the style of Wiggins or Pohlen, but Amber was more of a true point guard and her skills are quite missed this year!
