MBB vs OSU -
winflop - 02-11-2016
I think any kind of respectable finish to the season - and maybe Dawkins' job - is on the line tonight.
Looking at the seven games after OSU, I think 3-4 is about the best that can be expected and 2-5 or 1-6 is definitely possible the way they have been playing of late. Stanford needs to 4-4 in these last 8 games to have a regular season above .500 and have a winnable first-round matchup in the conference tournament.
A loss tonight leads to a five-game losing streak, little hope of a winning record overall, a likely 7-11/6-12 conf record or worse, and a more likely first-round loss in the conf tournament with no postseason.
I hope they go out and play their hearts out.

Michael Humphrey will play tonight according to my source who received a text from Michael today. Deep thigh bruise from the Utah game is much better; however, he still could be limited.

Tom Fitzgerald says Humphrey is expected to play, and they might petition for a medical redshirt for Travis.
Quote:What to look for: The Cardinal have given up 263 points (88-point average) in their past three games, all losses, so they clearly have to return to their usual stingy defense. Forward Reid Travis will sit out another week with a stress reaction in his leg, and coach Johnny Dawkins said the school might petition the NCAA for a medical redshirt season. Travis played in all eight nonconference games and was the teams leading rebounder (7.1 per game) before his injury. Forward Michael Humphrey is expected to play after missing all but two minutes of the Cal game with a knee bruise.

And Cal ahead of #11 Oregon 27-9 with 11:00 to go in the first half. Is this good for us?

Rule of Tree has a new article summarizing the case against Dawkins. It's nothing that hasn't been said here before, but it's well written:

Announcers in a recent game said that Travis could be back this week. Was there a setback? Or perhaps there was a realization that since this is a lost season for the team, there's no harm in Travis taking his time to fully recover and gaining an extra year of eligibility, too?

Then there's this tweet that Rule Of Tree may not have seen, having been blocked (apologies for the extra letters and symbols I don't know whether can be deleted):

Was at the game and the word that comes to mind is "painful!"  Tinkle, both Coach and son, wanted this game much more and brought some intensity. Tinkle was coaching like his job was on the line. Where is that intensity for Dawkins? Ben Braun keeps flashing in my mind. As the game started there were only a handful of students there. Hats off to the LSJUMB for bringing some cheering to the table. Ugh!

I ended up falling asleep at halftime and thought the first half went OK although the offense once again looked a bit disorganized and shot selection was pretty poor. They also didn't seem very well-prepared to handle the half-court trap (something Tinkle regularly run so there's really NO EXCUSE for not being ready for it). Defense looked pretty good, both individually and as a team.
Judging from the score, I reckon the second half didn't go nearly as well on offense.
I feel bad for the boys that barring a miracle they won't have a postseason this year. They deserve a better result and a better coach. Maybe if they and their parents go to Muir...seemed to work elsewhere.

Killing me that we could have probably had BOTH Tinkles.

The lack of fan intensity is understandable and justifiable after so many years of high quality basketball the last eight have been nothing short of a complete disappointment.

Are you actually still going to games? When I bailed on my season tickets after the 2011-12 season, it was because the games weren't exciting (the "brand" of basketball being played), the repeated late-game collapses which left me walking out frustrated, and the complete inconsistency that left me never knowing what to expect.

That's what I saw in the first half as well, at least on offense. Sounds like it was even worse in the second half. 21 points is pathetic, especially given the number of FTs.
I think the team did the job on the defensive end. I know OSU isn't a high-scoring team, but holding any team under 65 is good defense in my book.

Announced attendance = paid attendance which is the only metric available - and probably the only one Muir cares about. So if the actual attendance was even 2,250 that means that fully 50% of people who paid for tickets couldn't even bother to show up.
This isn't new to this season. Last year saw many conference games with similarly poor actual attendance. IIRC, not a single game sold out last year.

And of course so much of modern sports economics is getting butts in seats -- which pay for parking, concessions, and other incidentals.
I wonder whether the attendance has gotten worse over time. Certainly fans have been posting on this board that the statistics are inflated. But they've posted that for previous years as well. Who knows whether things have gotten worse, in the absence of objective, credible numbers?
