Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - 76lsjumb - 02-18-2016

winflop's, too!    ;D

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2617088-2016-ncaa-tournament-bracket-latest-projection-of-the-field-of-68/page/2

And, no, I don't write for bleacher report...

And, yes, I am fully aware that we are capable of losing tonight in Pullman, as Stanford has, for decades, unfortunately managed to do at the most inopportune times...

Re: Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - burger - 02-18-2016

The all-time worst record for an NCAA at large bid is 18-14 (56%), and the fewest wins for an at large bid is 17.  If we go 5-1 the rest of the way, we'd be at 16 wins and 57% to close the regular season (I'm not counting our D-II win mid-season).  Even with 2 more wins in the Pac-12 tournament, we would not be assured of anything.

To put it more succinctly: don't believe everything you see in bleacherreport.

Re: Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - Papa John - 02-18-2016

Ken Pomeroy has Stanford at 112 out of 351 and 11 in the P-12 (ahead of only tonight's opponent).

Stanford has an RPI of 74 with a #1 strength of schedule with a record of 5-11 versus top 100 opponents.

Joe Lunardi of ESPN Bracketology fame omits Stanford entirely from today's projected bracket--not even in the first eight out.

Stanford has a lot of work to do to make the NCAA tournament, starting with a sweep of the Washington schools on the road.

I think this team will be lucky to make the Not Important Tournament with 4 of its last 6 games on the road and 2 tough home games before getting bounced in the first round of the conference tournament against a 5th-7th place team.

Not that such a prediction will surprise any of you.

Re: Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - Papa John - 02-18-2016

I wasn't making a prediction, winflop, just trying to be realistic about Stanford's snowball's chance to make the NCAA tournament. Although, if it happens, tonight was step one.

Stanford 72, WSU 56

I have Cox in Santa Barbara, and all I get is the LA and Arizona (Arizona?) Pac-12 Network feeds. Translation: lots of UCLA, USC and UA replays, but not much Stanford.

Alas, all I could do was follow the score on my phone. Did any living soul actually watch the game?

I'm glad they won, and it sounds like Big Mike had a big night, but beating the only team in the conference with a losing record and only one conference win is not a step, it's an expectation - even on the road.  Still have a chance to go 3-3 over the last six and finish the regular season with a winning record.

Re: Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - JJJ - 02-18-2016

Mike "Babyface" Humphrey was EVERYWHERE tonight. In one sequence, he dunked, blocked a shot on the other end, then stole the ball (or some variation of that order) within 90 seconds. Career high 26 pts, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 4 steals in 37 minutes (10-15 FG, 2-2 3pt). The future has to be in good hands, no matter how we finish this season. Although I wouldn't mind a miracle run the rest of this season, however far-fetched that may seem at the moment.  8)

Oh wait, he didn't lead the team in assists--that slacker!  :P

The beers were going down really easy as I watched this one. Our double-digit leads didn't always last as long as I would've liked (we got to 2-possession differentials more often than I would've liked) but the boys came through. Besides Humphrey's team-leading stats, Pickens was a "ball-hog" when he was in (and hitting), scoring as many as Rosco in far fewer minutes. I hope we can prepare for the Huskies and all they will bring on Saturday.

P.S. If I'm not mistaken, Verhoeven is still perfect from beyond the arc this year (1-1 today, 3-3 on the year)!

Re: Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - Papa John - 02-19-2016

Some updated numbers for Stanford men's basketball:

Pomeroy: 100 (up from 112)
RPI: 71 (up from 74)
RPI SOS: 1

Games remaining:
@UW RPI=75
vs USC RPI=23
vs UCLA RPI=77
@ASU RPI=83
@UA RPI=25

It's a crapshoot trying to predict a magic number of wins, but let's just pretend that--to be in the conversation--Stanford needs to finish with 18 wins and no bad losses. The most likely snowball's-chance scenario would be a sweep of UW, UCLA and ASU (all rated below us in RPI) and a split between USC and UA. That would get us to 5th or, more likely, 6th in the Pac-12, and we would absolutely need to win our first Pac-12 tournament game against someone like ASU or WSU.

By the way, here are the records of Dawkins-coached teams for the final five games of the regular conference season:
2009: 2-3
2010: 2-3
2011: 2-3
2012: 3-2 (won the NIT)
2013: 3-2 (made NIT)
2014: 3-2 (Sweet 16)
2015: 2-3 (won the NIT)

So in year 8 of the Dawkins era, a 4-1 finish to the regular season would be groundbreaking.

Every time I see that subject heading, I keep thinking that Dana Delaney has made public her uncontrollable fetish for any and all bearded, bespectacled journalists as long as they went to Cal.

Thanks PapaJohn,
If Dawkins goes 2-3 again, I really can't see him being retained.    The outcry from the few us still buying season tickets must echo in Maples.  Muir's credibility is on the line at this point, and 1 for 8 in terms of NCAA bids doesn't cut it.    I really hope they go 4-1, plus at least two wins in the P12.  It's time for either JD or Muir to step up....

That's the best and briefest summary of the men's hoops situation at Stanford that I've yet seen.  Well said, Treebound.

I hope one of them does, or it's time for both of them to go.

Do you believe in Dawkins enough to risk instability in the AD if Muir goes and not Dawkins?

I'd rather both men elevate their games immediately, but if I were forced to choose, I'd limit the turnover to the man in charge of one sport rather than the man in charge of all sports...

I think at this point if Muir goes whomever replaces him will unload Dawkins and bring in his own coach.  Dawkins' record is pretty clearly not good by any standard.

update... lost to UDub - FrankO - 02-23-2016

had 20 turnovers...

Mike Humphrey, who indeed had a 'breakout' game vs league doormat Wazzu... got all of 4 points vs the 'Dawgs...

team reversion to the norm

Re: Ooohhh! Aaahhh! Watch garvin's Head Explode... - fullmetal - 02-23-2016

The game against UW was winnable...except for the fact that Stanford shot 8-32 in the second half.  Sure, Stanford was -7 ast, and -7 blk, but shooting 25% in the second half after ending the first half tied at 26 pts is not going to get it done.  Yeah, the halftime score was 26-all.  (Also, Stanford was 0-13 fast break pts compared to UW.  Everything else compared favorably or roughly equal imho.)
