WBB Bracketology - Leftcoast - 02-22-2016

ESPN's Charlie Cream has Stanford as a 4 seed in South Carolina's region, on the opposite side from UConn and hosting a sub-regional with OK State as our matching 5 seed.  All in all this sounds pretty good - Early days but I'll take this should we be so lucky.

I would certainly take that.  Let's keep in mind, however, that Charlie has over the years been highly friendly to Stanford--often more so than the committee.

At this stage, depending on next weekend and the Pac 12 tournament, I could see us climbing considerable above a 4 seed if we win out and beat OSU, Oregon, and winning the Pac 12 tournament over ASU and UCLA along the way.  But we could lose two games next weekend and get knocked out of the Pac 12 tournement early, too, in which case we could sink to a 5 or 6 seed and lose the chance to host.  So--a lot is on the line.

I know there are a lot of variables outside our control, but what do you think are the ceiling and floor in regards to our seeding?

In the best case scenario, we sweep the Oregon schools and then win the Pac-12 tournament, beating a combination of AZ State, UCLA and Oregon State along the way. That would give us 3 more quality wins at least and we would be 27-6 (14-4) entering the tourney.  Could we be a #3 seed? I think 6 losses is too much for a #2 seed.

In the worst case scenario, we get swept by the Oregon schools and end up as a #4 seed in the conference tourney (the 5th place team already has 7 conference losses, so we can't be passed for a #4 seed) and after a first round bye, lose to the #12 seed (this is an absolute worst case scenario, so it presumes the #12 seed ousted the #5 seed). We would be 22-9 (12-6) with just one terrible loss to the #12 seed, but nearly double digit losses and entering the NCAA tourney on a 3-game losing streak. A #6 seed or #7 seed? Anything below would imply that we were a bubble team and I don't think even with this scenario, our stock would drop that much.

In other wBB news, Tennesse's 565-wk streak of being ranked in the AP poll ends. It had been ranked since Feb. 17, 1985.

UConn has the next active streak at 428 weeks.

Does anyone know how long our streak is?

According to the women's basketball schedule page from last year, the lowest we dropped to was #19/#20 after we lost to Oregon the last weekend of the season.

Funny how I thought beating Tennessee earlier this year was such a good win for us.

And yet they beat Oregon State in Corvallis a few days later. Go figure!

Re: WBB Bracketology - Mike - 02-24-2016

With this week's polls, we have now made the AP Top 25 for 427 consecutive weeks (second longest current streak, behind Connecticut at #1), and the coaches' poll for 289 consecutive weeks.

Re: WBB Bracketology - 81alum - 02-25-2016

Our ranking is helped by the fact that 4 of our losses were to teams that are currently ranked higher than us, a fifth (UCLA) to a team essentially tied in ranking, and the sixth (Santa Clara) is looking a whole lot less bad than it did at the time, with Santa Clara 21-6.  We don't have anything nearly as bad on our record as the loss at Arizona last year, for example--although we haven't really broken through and beaten any team that is currently ranked, either.  Friday will be our chance to get our first marquee win of the season.

As for Sunday, Oregon State has been getting some votes in the polls and would probably break into the to 25 if they beat us.  They have become a very dangerous team.

This weekend looms large.

Re: WBB Bracketology - BobK - 02-25-2016

Here I am again.  Oregon getting some votes.  Not Oregon State.  However Oregon's RPI is 60 because of their super easy pre season schedule.

Re: WBB Bracketology - Jskass - 02-25-2016

so sounds like we need to round up a BIG crowd for BOTH games.

Sadly, I can't make either game, due to family commitments.  Cheer loudly for me.

Re: WBB Bracketology - BobK - 02-25-2016

We will MT.

5 teams ranked in the tension tonight.  Not good for us.  And worse Tenn loses to Alabama

So, we're one or two weeks below them? (Like being a year younger, you can never catch up.)  I wasn't able to easily find this info.  Do you have some links?

----
By the way, #10 Louisville and #15 Kentucky strengthened their positions today with good wins, while #5 Ohio State got knocked down a peg yesterday.

The PAC-12 teams have more upcoming games against ranked top-16 teams than the other ranked teams.  Whoever wins the tourney will be in a good position.  I guess any PAC-12 team could possibly be 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 1-1, 0-2 against ranked teams in the remaining games.  Any team that comes out 3-0 will be in good shape.  0-2 would drop Stanford down maybe out of a 4-seed.  1-2 will be borderline at a 4-seed.  1-1 and we likely get a 4-seed.  2-1 and we may be able to squeeze into a 3-seed.  3-0 and we maybe get a 2-seed.

Re: WBB Bracketology - Jskass - 02-26-2016

So how much does it help Louisville and KY to beat teams whom they outranked by 7 and 9 respectively? To my naive eye, I don't understand how that truly helps, whereas when we  lost to a team ranked 4-5 slots above us (ASU a few weeks ago), we fell several slots.

Re: WBB Bracketology - Mike - 02-26-2016

Whoops! Correction. It should be 283, not 427 straight AP Top 25 polls for Stanford. I apologize.

(From gostanford.com posting today:)

Checking The Polls

o Stanford is No. 13 in the AP top 25 and No. 13 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

o Stanford has appeared in the AP rankings 492 times out of 707 total polls since 1977 (69.6 percent), with an average positioning of 7.0. It’s been in the past 283 polls, the second-longest active streak behind Connecticut (428). Stanford has also been in 290 consecutive coaches polls.

o The Cardinal’s 492 all-time appearances in the AP top 25 are fourth behind Tennessee (692), Georgia (522) and Texas (498).

Re: WBB Bracketology - BobK - 02-26-2016

Jks I think you should be looking at the RPI not ranking and how those teams do.  That's what is important to Stanford in order to host.

Mike thanks for the update and the research.
