Agree. It helps our cause that the Warriors are on a historic quest. At the margins, I imagine it'd be hard to walk away from that right now, and I sure hope Muir isn't willing to extend the search into mid-June...

It's a pretty hedged prediction. The placement in the article implies he thinks Collins is the number-one choice, but the actual language stops well short of it.

"Don't be surprised" isn't exactly "will probably happen"; it's something that's a realistic possibility.

Sources expect -- what sources? Are they in the athletic department? Boosters? Who?

"Pursue" -- what does that mean? Interview with? Negotiate with?

Anyway, not to play too much of the word games here, but it's a bit of a frustrating article to read journalistically: I have little idea what Wilner actually thinks is likely or not.

Collins strikes me as having too little experience; I'd prefer a good head coach to him. But he doesn't strike me as an outright bad choice. My big qualm is... would he drop out of the Warriors to coach at Stanford? Try juggling both? Logistically it seems difficult.

This Purdy article is amusing.  Dawkins couldn't succeed because he wasn't familiar with the West Coast and "how the university does business" (meaning admissions, academics, fan apathy)?  Give me a break.  Dawkins recruited well and the teams, for the most part, had talent (this year not nearly as much as in prior years).  The problem was not his Duke background or the fact that he is not a West Coast guy.  The problem was his almost singular ability to get the least out of his talent.  He had rosters with multiple NBA draft picks that consistently underachieved, which to my eye was a function of his inability to find a scheme to play to the team's strengths and very poor player development.  In other words, his failures were on the court.  Fan support and other issues were derivative of the team's lack of success.

I think we need to find a good coach, period.  If he has ties to Stanford, great.  If he otherwise comes from a school with strong academics, great.  If he happens to have absorbed by osmosis the magic vapor that leads to coaching success on the West Coast that can only come from proximity to the Pacific Ocean, fantastic.  But none of those things matter if he is not a good coach first and foremost.  I think scouring the mid-majors for a bright, young, energetic coach is the move.  Let's find the next Brad Stevens (if only it were that easy), and I don't care if he has never been to the Pacific time zone.

Is Jarron Collins considered by other colleges and universities a strong candidate for their openings?

If not, that's a big red flag to me.

Re: Wilner declares Jarron Collins the favorite - teejers1 - 03-15-2016

Jarron Collins would be an irresponsible hire by Muir (and I'm a big fan of Jarron's).  Period.  The guy has ZERO head coaching experience, and he happens to be on the coaching roster of a historically GREAT team.  Who knows what his value is to that organization, let alone his head coaching acumen.

I would be SHOCKED if Collins is the hire.  (And ftr, I wouldn't hire Walton for similar reasons, though he at least has an incredibly successful 40+ game stretch as head man with this historically good Ws team).

I assume Walton is a lock to be some poor NBA team's next head coach.  Much like Bruce Arians leveraged a successful fill-in role with the Colts while Chuck Pagano was battling cancer into a full time job with Arizona, I have to believe that Walton is the hot assistant coach for an NBA team looking to capture that magic.  There are no guarantees, but inasmuch as auditions go, he nailed it.

Unless Muir wants the recruiting cycle to completely pass by Stanford then Collins should not be considered.  We saw how that set the program back with Dawkins.  I doubt Muir would make the same mistake.

This just shows me how clueless Wilner is and how weak his sources are.

We would never hire a coach who can't take the job within 2 weeks.

Ha, I think we are his "sources," Winflop!

I see Collins and Madsen only as assistants at this point.  This search will be very interesting given Muir's basketball history and his position on the committee.  It is his first major hire.    I'm hopeful he had already compiled a short list and was doing some scouting while in Las Vegas.

Re: Wilner declares Jarron Collins the favorite - jacketree - 03-15-2016

Within two weeks of when?  Now?  Final Four?

I hope one criterion isn't that the coach be tournament-free right now, or in charge of a sufficiently early exit to meet some arbitrary time frame.  So far Stanford is competing with a bunch of WCC programs (SCU, USF, Portland) and the likes of TCU and Illinois (I think?) for available talent.  I like those odds; no need to rush.  Thankfully, UCLA looks like they are hanging on to Alford.

Vis a vis Collins - he gives great interviews with Ros, and moved up a chair this year with Alvin Gentry going to New Orleans, but I thought Walton and Ron Adams are the so-called 'coordinators'.  That would be a crazy, desperate hire, as would Madsen, Kight and just about any other mystic trip down memory lane. I wonder if Jarron is even interested, or he'd rather work his way up the NBA food chain?

I'm not going to pretend just anybody could coach the Warriors to 27 games over .500 (60-6) at this point, because good coaches like Monty and coaches like Mark Jackson couldn't. (See what I did there?)  I don't remember too many groups of athletes this self-enabling.  Perhaps it took Kerr and Walton to bring it out. Would love to see something like that on the Farm, but I doubt Walton wants to touch Stanford when he'll be coaching in the League soon enough.

So who is out there doing work for TNT poised to become the next Kerr?    Barkley!  :P  The intriguing names I've seen are Brad Underwood (he's a Lumberjack and he's OK) and King Rice with a very steady upward trajectory over 5 years at Monmouth to 27-7 this year; 17-3 in conference and in the tourney. He's been at Oregon and Vandy as an assistant and was head coach for the Bahamas National Team. He must be pretty cool, even if he was a Tarheel.

And Garvin, the Warriors play basketball as God intended.  Forget Eric Clapton....Steph Curry is the messiah.  My son and I were exchanging texts during that OKC game.  That last shot was filthy.
