Wilner's 2017 Pac-12 MBB projections -

Yikes, not much confidence in the returning talent or the impact of our new coach.
Quote:8. Stanford (15-15/8-10/9th): The major personnel question involves all-conference forward Rosco Allen. For the moment, well assume Allen withdrawals from the draft and returns for his senior year. Everyone else is back for new coach Jerod Haase, whose charge is to maximize the talent the Cardinal has underachieved for many years and make the program relevant again. Look for instant improvement in some areas, but only modest climb up the standings.
8th is what I might expect if Rosco leaves. If he stays as Wilner assumes, I think a top-half of the conference should be expected, and I think we have a good chance at winding up in the top third.

What a waste of ink & paper :P
Don't even know who's staying and who's going. At least wait until the deadline formally declare for the NBA draft.

Well, now that the draft withdrawal deadline has passed,
here's John Gasaway's projections for PAC-12 upcoming season. Behind the ESPNInsider paywall, but Stanford is projected 10th out of 12th now that Rosco is gone. Nevertheless projects a "solid first season" for Haase, assuming Travis and Cartwright are both shipshape come November.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but it's a sad state when 10th out of 12 could qualify as a solid season.

Given most of the last 8 years, 10th isn't that much of a dropoff.
Next year is a total gimme for Haase. I have no expectations and will enjoy whatever successes happen and will look for reasons to be optimistic about the future. But after that I expect to see improvement and a restoration as a top-tier program in the conference.

True enough, but I don't think I would consider a dropoff of any sort a solid first season.
Though first seasons are often tough.

Normally I'd agree but with Rosco leaving there just isn't much in the cupboard for next year. It's gonna take Haase time to develop the guys who fit best. And that means the team is going to have its struggles next year.

The suggestion that the cupboard is empty is a pretty big overstatement. Travis, Humphrey, Pickens, Sheffield, and maybe even Marcus Allen all looked fantastic at times last year. The issue for all of them was consistently playing well (and, for Travis, staying healthy), and who knows how much of that had to do with bad coaching by Dawkins.
The team is still full of 3- and 4-star recruits, with 2 more 4-stars coming next year. Maybe none of them will pan out, maybe the team will struggle to implement Haase's new system, maybe the lack of Rosco Allen will doom us, or maybe Dawkins got the best out of our guys that anyone could--all of that remains to be seen. But the suggestion that the team lacks talent is wrong.

Last year I see a lot of raw, unproven talent that could not play with the level of consistency needed to be successful in the Pac-12. At times they all looked good, but at other times they looked really bad. Maybe some/most of that is coaching - we will have a decent feel for that in about 7 months. But other than Rosco & Travis I didn't see anyone who would start for a program in the top half of the conference.

I hope a lot of it was coaching last year. We had to play zone because the man-to-man defense was so bad. Since Haase is a primary man-to-man guy, we'll see this year whether, at least for man-to-man defense, it was coaching or players.
good individual talent last year... -

but too often, cohesive and smart team play lacking... and that was mostly on coaching
