Does he have AD experience or are they assuming "he used to be good at football" is enough? I don't see anything on wikipedia to that effect.

May his AD career go as well as his political career. He may turn out to be good, but nothing in his CV would predict success as an AD.

Could you have more Hubris? Former football players turned broadcasters and loser politicians? Seriously? The AD job at Southern Ca.l in this day and age requires someone skilled in management, who understands finance, and digital media. I can see why they might want someone who is media-friendly to be the pubic face, and leave the "real administrative work" to someone who knows what they are doing, but do you really want that when other ADs are savvy and experienced leaders of organizations? Makes USC's place at the conference decision-making table look a little weak, IMO.

Just re-checked the date to make sure it wasn't April 1. I think we're good.

The new AD will oversee the major renovation of the Coliseum. Construction planned to be ready in time for the 2018 football season. Cost - $270M to be funded entirely by U.SC Athletics. I would imagine that one of the top items on Swann's list is raising money for the Coliseum.Â
U.SC has a well-rounded athletic program with strong women's and men's teams in many sports. But this decision tells T.rojan fans that only one of them matters.

Things don't change in La La Land
Quote:USC didnt hire Swann for his skill set, it hired him for his name and his deep connection to the school. That formula hasnt worked the past two times they tried it. Leave it to the most delusional athletic department in America to try again.

Ted Miller is skeptical, to be charitable:
http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/99400/swanns-hiring-a-risk-for-usc
Quote:USC fans didn't get their "Nick Saban, Urban Meyer or Jim Harbaugh is coming to save us!" moment with any of the recent football coaching hires, and now they don't get a simple "home run!" judgment from college football observers upon hiring their next AD.
and
Quote:Swann's résumé is notably similar to Haden's and the man Haden replaced, Mike Garrett: USC football legend. Smart. Successful outside of football.
And zero experience in athletic administration.
...
Not to be snarky, but has anyone noticed that at times over the past few decades or so, a lack of administrative skills has been a problem at USC?
and
Quote:Yet this is another uncertain move that won't energize the fan base, just as when Garrett hired Lane Kiffin to replace Carroll, and Haden tapped Sarkisian and Helton. It might work out, but no one will be surprised if it doesn't.
...
Hiring Swann doesn't suggest a seriousness about unquestioned competence. It suggests that USC hasn't learned any lessons from its recent past.

Swann a decent guy who actually has values... which Garrett DID NOT have...
Haden may have been a Rhodes Scholar, businessman in the LA circuit, and Domer broadcast announcer, but I'd go with Swann's judgement over his.
He has served on the Boards of several well known global and national Corporations over the past decade, so he has picked up substantial oversight/business experience.
He will be the face of U.SC athletics, not a nitty-gritty administrator of detail. That will be delegated to others on staff who presumably are proven in their respective jobs. IMHO, his toughest job will be keeping the Department clean and making sure over-zealous Toejam backers don't break any rules. He'll have plenty of help in managing/hiring/firing coaches as the need arises.Â
Saw that old news clip... nothing remotely akin since. Those cops back in the '70's who arrested his brother might have been St Ignatius kids out targeting Serra kids.... or something similar ;)

he'll have help on the Coliseum remodel, from Pat Haden's "retirement" announcement
USC president Max Nikias told the university community this morning that athletic director Pat Haden has announced his retirement, effective June 30. After that time, Nikias said that Haden will remain at USC for a year, guiding the Coliseum renovation.

Well, I know from personal experience that Mr. Swann was once a racist. While I was attending the Offense/Defense football camp in Hayward (mid-70s), he was one of the pros in attendance. Rumor at the camp was that he wouldn't work with white kids. He was helping campers with proper running motion and starting technique for the 40 yard dash. I watched him coach several black kids on their technique. I waited patiently for my turn. When he was free I asked him if he could help me with my 40 start. He just looked at me, turned around, and walked away. During that camp, I never saw him help one white kid.
