MBB recruits - winflop - 04-13-2016

Looks like we have two guys coming, possibly a third who is unranked
- Kodye Pugh (4*) 6'7" SF
- Trevor Stanback (3*) 6'9" C
- Justin Whitfield (0*) 6'5" SG

All of the other players who got offers have committed elsehwere.

Not sure what to think about this

Thinking this abouut our recruits... - FrankO - 04-13-2016

Stanback, who signed in November,  a Big 4 star with good potential

Pugh a very good 4 star wing with high potential... who committed to Stanford, not necessarily Dawkins/staff... Haase immediately contacted, then visited him/his family... and prior to Haase's announcement, JDawk advised him to stuick with Stanford... we got a good one there with him...

the other kid is a walk-on shooter... and we do need shooters... if he proves himself he might see playing time... we lost out on the Aussie sharpshooter (to Miami) so he likely fills a need without costing us a scholie

Given that we only had 1 open scholie slot If Rosco, Verhoeven and Sanders all stay for 5th year,  then my guess is  Malcolm might be asked to  revert to walk-on status (which is what he came in on)... as Physicians his parents could very likely afford it for one last year

Re: MBB recruits - BobK - 04-13-2016

I see Whitfield is 6-6 from Houston but tell us more.  He's unranked

Re: MBB recruits - burger - 04-13-2016

Good to see that we didn't lose any recruits with the coaching change.  In that respect, this is already looking much better than the Johnson-Dawkins transition.

Also, if JD really did tell Pugh to stick with us, then my opinion of Dawkins just went up 6 notches.

Sanders was not invited back for a 5th year. He wasn't even with the team at the end of the season. And my guess is Verhoeven wasn't asked back either.

Re: MBB recruits - StanfordBB - 04-14-2016

StannyBoy, not sure of your information as I do not believe that there has been any comment on why Sanders was suspended and I do believe that he was "on the bench" albeit in street clothes at the end of the season and Haase had originally recruited him. Also Verhoeven received many more minutes at the end of the season when he was healthy. Where did you see/hear the information that they would not be back??

Re: MBB recruits - BobK - 04-14-2016

Sanders while suspended was certainly with the team and on the bench at games.

Exactly.  If Rosco goes to the draft then there are 2 scholies available.  If he stays then someone will be losing theirs.

Re: MBB recruits - BobK - 04-14-2016

Wow.  Right now we have 14 on Scholie come summer school.  Other than that we don't know what might happen.  Of course it would help if we knew who was practicing/working out right now

If I were him, I'd think carefully before cutting Verhoeven loose (if, indeed, Verhoeven is interested in returning). Travis Reid has missed the better part of two seasons with very similar leg injuries. You wanna roll the dice on his leg next season?

+1.  Between injuries and foul trouble, you can never have too many big guys.  And Verhoeven was playing pretty well towards the end of last season.  I'd like to see him back.  I'm more equivocal on Sanders.

By the way, Dawkins come across well here.

I think someone had implied on the Rivals board the suspension was due to Sanders being unhappy not getting a 5th year. If we already have 1 open spot then Verhoeven should be back. I thought we needed to free up 2 spots.

Dawkins is a good guy, who I have always liked.  Too bad he was not a good coach.  I rooted for him until the end, even as it became increasingly obvious that success on the basketball floor was not going to come.  I wish him well going forward.

I wouldn't think twice about it.  He's got one year left with a new coach & new system, and he's not shown to be so head & shoulders above the other PGs on the roster.  This is just the harsh reality of college compared to professional - there's a finite time.  If you're a short timer and not clearly better than the others, you are going to fall further down the depth chart because the program would rather make a larger investment in developing a younger player who will be around for longer.

Plus, he did something to warrant an indefinite suspension which is a) rare in the Dawkins Era, and b) an indication of not being a team player if it's because of how he responded to not getting a 5th year as rumored above.

Re: MBB recruits - StanfordBB - 04-14-2016

Do we know that it might not have been academic? Too much supposition here, I look forward to seeing the final makeup of the team.

Garvin nailed it on Sanders... - FrankO - 04-14-2016

data and facts tell the tale... and Garvin had them

I am not very confident about Cartwright getting completely recovered from that gruesome injury by next fall to the player he once was/showed the potential to be

until I am certain that Cartwright is 100% both mentally and physically ready to take on being our point successfully, I want Sanders back... in the land of the blind, the man with one eye is King

Malcolm, though more athletic that bro Marcus,  amply demonstrated his play as turnovers waiting to happen.

FrankO, you are spot on.  None of us knows what happened at the end of the season or Sanders' current status with the team.  I don't know that I would trust any source to be authoritative other than Coach Haase or Christian Sanders himself.  Or BobK.  I'll wait for the facts and choose to ignore the speculation (despite the usual reliability of "someone on Rivals").

Re: MBB recruits - BobK - 04-14-2016

No idea just guessing.
Day 1 Sr night no scholie players introduced
Day 7 we learn about the suspension and about the same time we learn about Pugh despite having no openings.
Thus a good guess  But just a guess and now a new coach who has a decision to make
