USC - pcgoode - 04-14-2016

Tweeted by Bonagura. I didn't realize Trojans were this low on DL depth.

USC spring game will be situational as opposed to a true scrimmage. Helton says lack of DL depth makes this right way to do it.

Yeah, they lost their only interior DL upperclassman, Kenny Bigelow, to a torn ACL. They are switching defensive schemes from a 4-3 to a 5-2 so instead of two interior linemen they are going with three. Most players playing at OLB were converted to DE, and several DEs were converted to DT to fit this scheme. They really only have one true NT on the roster.

The also lost a starting OLB who probably would have been converted to DE after he was caught using a banned substance.

They have loads of talent at DE particularly from the 2015 class and a stud at DT (Rasheem Green), but most of their interior players are unproven.

Functionally a 5-2 is similar to a 3-4, except the two outside linebackers play with their hand down as DE's.  Your 3-4 DE's become "interior linemen".

Sorry, what Boston Card said.

A 5-2 scheme represents the number of linemen and linebackers in a front seven. It has two defensive ends, two defensive tackles, one nose tackle, and two inside linebackers. This scheme places emphasis on stopping the run and pressuring the QB on passing plays.

A 4-3 scheme has two defensive ends (hand down on the ground or stand up depending on the play),  two interior defensive linemen, and three linebackers. USC in recent years used one DT and one NT for its interior positions.

I think the confusion stems from trying to address a DLine depth problem by adding more down linemen.  Stanford arguably went the other direction last year, playing a lot of 2-5 (or perhaps 2-4-5?).  But sure, you can put your OLBs on the line and call it a 5-2.

Perhaps that means we'll be seeing more of this (a certain player's first TD catching the ball just over the DLine).

I forgot (or never noticed) he did KO coverage.

Yes, that was precisely my point, but, uh, thanks to all you kind gentlemen who explained what a 5-2 was.
