2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - BigEasyCard - 05-24-2016

With the just completed National Championship by Women's Tennis, my unofficial spreadsheet shows the Cardinal with a minimum of 1,417 points.

The Cardinal Women have scored in twelve sports, with their ten highest totaling 749.75.  They still have scoring opportunities in Golf, Rowing, and Outdoor T&F.

The Cardinal Men have scored in nine sports for a total of 667.25.  They still have scoring opportunities in Golf, Tennis, and Outdoor T&F.

Fantastic, thanks

I take it we've given up on baseball?  :(

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - BostonCard - 05-24-2016

Also, what are our chances of another national title this year?  W Golf is down to the last four, so I would think our chances are decent.  M golf is down to 15(?) and while I get the sense we are good, and anything can happen in match play, we are probably not the favorites.  How are we looking in M tennis and track?

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - fullmetal - 05-24-2016

I think M Tennis went down in the quarterfinals 2-4 to UCLA.  Singles/doubles have yet to play in M Tennis though.

W Rowing is not looking championship-ready, but a team podium finish would be awesome.  I have moderately optimistic expectations for the varsity eight, but the 2V and the V4 have a lot of ground to make up judging by the Pac-12 results.

Round of 16. That's a tie for 9th, worth 64 points based on last year's final standings.

Oops.  The NCAA site's bracket is very poorly designed ><;;

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - BigEasyCard - 05-24-2016

The totals which I posted include 64 points for Men's Tennis, 100 points for Women's Tennis, and 82.5 points for Women's Golf based on making the final four.  I assumed baseball not dancing this year.

I have not checked any other schools to see if anyone is gaining on us.  However, I do expect that we will exceed last year's total of 1,448 points by at least 50.

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - BigEasyCard - 05-24-2016

Updating for Women's Golf minimum of 90 points and Men's Golf minimum of 43 points, my unofficial spreadsheet shows the Cardinal with a total of 1,467.50 points.

The Cardinal Women have scored in twelve sports, with their ten highest totaling 757.25.  They still have scoring opportunities in Golf, Rowing, and Outdoor T&F.

The Cardinal Men have scored in ten sports for a total of 710.25.  They still have scoring opportunities in Golf and Outdoor T&F.

BEC--

Where would various sports have to finish to make a positive contribution, and what sports would be eliminated?  I did this for the last few years, but if you're willing to do the work, I'm more than happy to take advantage :).

VG,

On the Women's side, Golf has another possible 10 points on the table this afternoon.

The two lowest scores included in the current 757.25 total are Lacrosse with 53 and Indoor T&F with 58.5.  So those are the thresholds for Rowing and Outdoor T&F.

On the Men's side, Golf has significant upside from the current estimate of 43 for making the final 30.  I expect that they will replace Wrestling's 55 points.

The next lowest score included in the current 710.25 total is Fencing at 57.  That is the threshold for Outdoor T&F.

Big thanks, Big Easy

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - BigEasyCard - 05-25-2016

Thanks BobK.  Perhaps you, fullmetal, and others can add your assessment of point prospects for the remaining scoring opportunities.

The following are approximate.  Women's Rowing would add points for a finish about 12th or higher.  Outdoor T&F would add points for a finish about 18th or higher (both Men and Women).

I'm assuming that Men's Golf will do well enough to make Wrestling's 55 points the lowest included score and thus the threshold for Outdoor T&F.  That would require a finish above about 17th for the golfers.

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - BobK - 05-25-2016

I'm a brobdingnagian T&F fan and think higher than 18 for both but the NCAA regionals start tomorrow so we shall see after Saturday.  I'll be at the NCAAs in Eugene.

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - fullmetal - 05-25-2016

I'm guessing a finish between 5th-9th place for women's rowing, but I'd love to be surprised.

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - TrumpCard - 05-25-2016

Does UCLA have any teams with good prospects to win a title this Spring?  It would be nice to close within 3.

Nice one, BC!  We can cross men's golf off the list too.  For the first time in the medal/match play era, UCLA did not qualify for the national tournament.

Women's Rowing

UCLA was not selected for the national championship regatta.  More impressively, Washington State was selected...how the times have changed.  They have work to do at Marina del Rey.

BTW, the smart money is on kal to win the team championship (they look good), with Ohio State in 2nd and Virginia 3rd (maybe followed by Princeton, Brown, and Stanford?).  The kal head coach is Al Acosta, former Stanford women's lightweight rowing coach with multiple national championships under his belt from his Stanford tenure (and yeah, it was lightweight rowing, but still).

Re: 2015-16 Directors' Cup Update - TrumpCard - 05-25-2016

There was a brief time a couple of years ago when it seemed like Stanford was going to be in annual dog fights for the Directors' Cup, but Stanford has pulled away from the competition again.  There's even less suspense this year than there was last year, and I like it this way.
