UCSD is likely heading to D1. Should we add them to the Pac-12 as an affiliate? - Canalejas - 05-24-2016

UCSD students vote to fund Div. I sports

It looks like their move up to D1 is contingent on receiving an invitation from the Big West Conference, and that invitation is very likely.
UCSD currently plays a few sports not sponsored by the Big West, but sponsored by the Pac-12. They are:

Men's Crew
Women's Crew
Men's Swimming and Diving
Women's Swimming and Diving

Would you support adding UCSD to our league for those sports? Keep in mind that the Pac-12 already has four affiliate members (Boise State, Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield for wrestling and SDSU for men's soccer.)

UCSD also plays a couple sports not sponsored by either league but sponsored by the MPSF (men's volleyball and men's water polo.) Unfortunately, even with their inclusion we wouldn't have the necessary 6 teams to sponsor them as Pac-12 sports. Though in the case of men's volleyball we could also invite UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. That would match what we do with wrestling, which consists of 3 full members and 3 affiliate members.

UCSD also has a fencing program but there aren't enough schools in the western US that do for even the MPSF to sponsor the sport, let alone the Pac-12.

I would venture that USCD's rowing teams are competitive club crews but not competitive varsity crews.  But with funding and good coaching, who knows their ceiling?

As long as there is room in the conference for additional teams in those sports, and it would be either a financial positive or revenue-neutral for the league (and thus, existing league members), I don't have any objection.

Men's Rowing is currently sponsored by six teams, though two of those are only at the club level.
Women's Rowing is currently sponsored by seven teams.
Men's Swimming and Diving is currently sponsored by six teams.
Women's Swimming and Diving is currently sponsored by nine teams.

I don't know what an ideal number of teams is in any of those sports, though.

Yes to adding to Pac12 in sports mentioned.

Sure why not?

The Pac-12 already includes Boise State, C.al State Bakersfield, and CalPoly SLO in wrestling, and it includes San Diego State in men's soccer.  I don't see any obvious reason that the conference couldn't add UCSD in a few sports. I suppose there are financial and facilities issues to consider, but I suspect those can be resolved.

No logistical issues for rowing.  But their caliber of competition would not compare right now.

To answer the question in the title - hell no.

UC Davis would be a better fit among the UC's - they actually have a decent FB program.

Not even sure UCSD has enough sports teams to be ELIGIBLE for P12.

I should point out a key difference between our current affiliate members (Boise State, CS Bakersfield, CalPoly SLO and SDSU) and the hypothetical affiliate membership of UCSD.  We need our current affiliates in order to sponsor wrestling and men's soccer.  Without them there would be no Pac-12 versions of those sports and we'd need the MPSF or some sport-specific conference for those two sports.  But we don't need UCSD for crew or swimming&diving.  Not unless some of our current members cut one or more of those sports.  So for me it's a matter of wanting UCSD in, albeit in a very limited form, instead of the conference needing a warm body to be able to get our numbers up to the required threshold.

Me thinks you are out of date on UC Davis Football win.  Not good at all since moving to D1

UCSD fields 23 varsity sports teams.  That's more than every member of the Pac-12 except for Stanford, UCB and ASU.

But that's beside the point because I don't think we're actually considering them (or UD Davis) for full membership.  I was more curious if we'd be willing to give a home to the Triton sports that won't have a landing place in their soon-to-be D1 conference, the Big West.

Sure. Why not?

I believe the question is not whether UCSD should join the Pac-12 as a full member, but whether they should join as an affiliate member in a few sports that aren't sponsored in the Big West.

OK sorry I misunderstood the qualifications and need for affiliates.  Maybe they are a good fit but do we need more?
