Admin's Poll - FrankO - 05-24-2016

I couldn't find Yvonne's poll to vote on, but for me,  have no problem with eliminating the political discussion from the Cardboard. I appreciate her concerns. She set up this board and puts all the work in.

If people want politics, they can always go to the Bootleg's  Current Events Board, which, BTW,  is not under the Scout/Bootleg Subscription...is entirely free.  A mix of folks post/opine there... some very cogent like terry2...  others, perhaps not... your choice. And they do have an 'ignore this poster ' button

Re: Admin's Poll - DC 86 - 05-24-2016

The poll is within the "Political speech on the CardBoard" thread above.

Re: Admin's Poll - FrankO - 05-24-2016

Thanks, found it.

Re: Admin's Poll - CowboyIndian - 05-24-2016

It's a lot like folks who get incensed about what's on TV. Change the damn channel or shut it off. Same options here.

A bit understated are we?  Sadly, the Bootleg CEB, which had been one of the best places on the internet to get a mix of ideas exchanged (mostly) respectfully has descended into an echo cesspool, where the recently banned poster would probably be on the tame end of things. What had been a signal-to-noise ratio of 10-1, has now been inverted. I left several months ago, but still occasionally lurk.  And every time I do I am sorry I did, save for the occasional well-reasoned post by Terry, and maybe one or two other posters.  Mostly, though, it has been hijacked to complain about the latest "outrage" and to circle jerk about how "we" are right and the other side is a bunch of crazy, communists intent on destroying our country.  Thanks, but no thanks.

That being said, the CEB could use an infusion of ideas.  I do feel bad that by staying away from the place I reinforce its worst features (I'm not arrogant enough to presume I can fix it, but the place has gone to hell due to a number of decisions by like minded people, not necessarily acting in concert, but more or less coming to the same rationale... that it is not worth it. And in so doing, we all contributed to the very facets that made us leave).  So, maybe an influx of rational, well reasoned people taking the rhetorical high ground will turn things around.

Re: Admin's Poll - fullmetal - 05-24-2016

Can we get garvin and ferrari back and all promise to play nicely with each other?  This board is not the same without them.

Re: Admin's Poll - BostonCard - 05-24-2016

Wait, what happened to Garvin?

Re: Admin's Poll - fullmetal - 05-24-2016

I presume he left in protest...but his username's been erased from the memberlist, so it's not as if he's let his account go fallow.  Could have been banned :(

If a bunch of Stanford grads can't manage to hold civil, constructive discussions, it's a sad commentary and doesnt reflect especially well on our alma mater. Not saying that others are any better. I probably am just an arrogant elitist who expects us to do better, and maybe even set an example for those who might visit our site.

But this shouldnt fall on Yvonne to police us. That's not fair.

Re: Admin's Poll - DC 86 - 05-24-2016

Garvin asked to be banned, and so he was.

Re: Admin's Poll - stupac2 - 05-24-2016

If Garvin was banned, it was presumably for this: http://thecardboard.org/board/index.php?topic=15066.msg163160#msg163160

FWIW I'm fine with him coming back, in case the opinion of a gutless little bitch matters.

Re: Admin's Poll - Langdude - 05-24-2016

Garvin is gone as well? He's a great poster. This is not good.

I fear that, in light of these sad turn of events, the content here is going to get more vapid now.

I do not need political discussions on the board either; that's not why I come here. But I just skipped those threads in which I was not interested. I have a hard time understanding why others had so much trouble ignoring them, too. (I realize administrators cannot ignore them. I wonder if there can be a non-Yvonne administrator that can do that for her.)

I understand Yvonne not wanting to deal with monitoring discourse. But I do remember her willingly engaging in these political discussions as well, sometimes pointedly and uncharitably IMO, so I am surprised that it is now so exhausting to her.

I do realize this is a private board and administrators can do whatever they want. I know that Yvonne has done a great deal of work for which we are all thankful. I will trust that ownership and operatorship will do what is best for the survival and thriving of the entire Board community, a community that, even if created and administratively maintained by a very small group of people, has been shaped and nourished by many, many others.

Congratulations to women's tennis! 100 days to kickoff!

this is not good.  garvin and redrum were the two drivers of my coming to and then staying with this site.  I assume the latter is okay and I hope the former comes back.  it definitely will be a lesser site without him.

Or anyone else for that matter. Do we really need to be protected from divergent, even obnoxious and distasteful, opinions. If you don't like what's being said, respond or move along. Doesn't seem that difficult to me...at least for grownups.

Re: Admin's Poll - fullmetal - 05-24-2016

I hope that Yvonne can find it within herself to allow ferrari (and garvin) back to this community.  I hope that we all will speak without anger, malice, or mischaracterization on this board going forward.

If there's anything I can do to bring back the old collegial atmosphere, I will do it.  Maybe my silence during the fracas was a mistake; maybe I should have tried to de-escalate things directly.  I just want the big tent, pro-Stanford people together so that we can all enjoy meet-ups at the Rose Bowl and more.

edit: background--I joined the board sometime in 2003 while I was still an undergrad at Stanford.  garvin has been one of the main pillars of CardBoard discussion, online and in person.  I do not feel his self-ban in protest was impetuous.  The CardBoard is a much poorer place without his contributions.

This is my take on it.  Politically, while I am to the left of ferrari (who became perhaps the most outspoken conservative on the board), I likely fall to the right of much of this community.  Every day I read opinions here that I disagree with, and some that even frustrate me.  I simply weigh the pros and cons of getting involved in the discussion, and most of the time the latter outweigh the former.  I can't tell you the number of times I've typed up a response to something I've read here, walked away from the computer for ten minutes, and then upon returning decided not to post it.  I don't know that my method is the most productive, but it works for me, and I would suggest that others (particularly those who often find themselves in pissing matches) give it a try.

I'm watching the Warriors game so I apologize if the above wasn't entirely coherent.  My main point is that we as adults -- most of whom were educated at one of the world's elite universities -- shouldn't need to be shielded from from divergent opinions.  We should be able to treat each other with respect.  I surmise that it's a bit easier for those of us who are a bit farther to the right to be "tolerant" -- ferrari notwithstanding -- simply because we are used to being in the ideological minority.  We've had no choice but to develop a thick skin.  When I enter a thread, I already know that I am probably going to disagree with the prevailing opinion.  I imagine it's the same for some of the other, less liberal members of the community.  Perhaps that makes it easier to just roll our eyes at posts we find particularly egregious.

That said, I understand that this is a Stanford sports board and political discussion typically isn't germane.  With that in mind, I wouldn't consider it a great loss if off topic political threads were banned as a matter of policy.  However, I find it disheartening that we would collectively behave in such a way as to force Yvonne's hand in the matter.  Why can't we, as intellectuals, disagree respectfully?  Perhaps that's more of a rhetorical question.

Re: Admin's Poll - GoodGrief - 05-24-2016

I'm also concerned because the Administrator suggested that she might stop moderating the board if politics were to continue on the board. I hope the poll is just being used to get a feel of general opinion and not as mandate from the masses that might drive the Administrator away from running the board.

I thought the same.  I had pondered if it might be prudent to have a catch-all, no holds barred OT thread for all of our political discussion.  I doubt this board is active enough for it to become too unwieldy, and it could strike a nice balance.  We would still be allowed OT political discussion, the rest of the board would remain uncluttered, and Yvonne wouldn't need to moderate it (aside from merging the occasional errant OT thread into the main thread).  I'm not sure if leaving a lone thread unmoderated is feasible, but it might be something to consider.

For any fans of The Wire, imagine Hamsterdam in thread form  ;)

Moderators got to do what moderators got to do.

IMO, any bannings or decisions by the moderators are no big deal.  I appreciate their efforts.  It has to be a beating.

However, the reaction by some of the posters on this board to me represents a patronizing attitude and too quick a rush to "if you don't like it you can leave".

(I loved Stanford, but lots of the students had similar attitudes when I went there.  It brings back some not so fond memories.  That's on me and its a personal thing.)

I'm taking a break in honor of Garvin and as a godspeed to Ferrari, who to be honest was kind of a penis the last time he posted.  I got over it. (And because of the word-correct!  Jesus Mary and Joseph!)

Will talk to you guys in the weeks before our nail-biter with K-State.
