Today in veiled Michigan-Stanford beefs - washingtonismoney - 05-25-2016

Former Stanford coach, and current Michigan coach, Tim Drevno, sent out this: http://footballscoop.com/news/michigans-message-to-recruits-want-to-play-in-the-nfl-come-play-for-offensive-coordinator-tim-drevno/

Best guess is that ticked Mike Bloomgren off, leading him to tweet this: https://twitter.com/mbloom11/status/735565947738685442

Interesting find.  At some point in the next three years we are going to play Meeeshigan.    Hopefully, Harbaugh will still be there.  I still find it funny that he called out UofM for pushing soft academics for athletes while he was here and it upset so many of their alums.  Now he's the second coming of...hmmm, let's see how it goes this year.    It's fun to watch and I wish him well for what he did for us.  That being said, I still wish he was coaching the 49ers.

This points to only one thing - the absolute need for a home and home.  Both teams have open slots in 2018 and 2022.

I WANT TO SEE STANFORD PUT ON A CLINIC IN THE BIG HOUSE!!!!

Oh how I would love to see two of my alma maters stomp the Skunkbears in the same season.

Michigan's graphic of "Coach Drevno's Influence on the NFL" includes 7 Stanford players -- Fleener, Ertz, Toilolo, DeCastro, Martin, Yankey, and Fleming. Let's look at "Drevno's Influence" on those 7 players.

In 2007 and 2008, Drevno was listed as Stanford's TE coach. In 2009 and 2010, Drevno was listed as Stanford's Offensive Line coach, while Greg Roman was listed as the coach for TEs and OTs. Given Roman's responsibility for OTs, I assume that Drevno worked primarily with centers and guards and was not the primary coach for tackles.

Here's Drevno's coaching relationship to each player --

TE Fleener -- Drevno was Fleener's position coach for his first two years, 2007 (redshirted) and 2008.

TE Ertz -- Drevno was never Ertz's position coach. Ertz came to Stanford in 2009. Drevno's last year as TE coach was 2008.

TE Toilolo -- Drevno was never Toilolo's position coach. Toilolo came to Stanford in 2009, same as Ertz.

G DeCastro -- Drevno was DeCastro's position coach for his second and third years, 2009 and 2010.

T Martin -- Roman was the OT coach in Martin's second and third years, 2009 and 2010. Drevno was the offensive line coach.

T Fleming -- Roman was the OT coach in Fleming's true freshman year, 2010 (redshirted). Drevno was the offensive line coach.

T Yankey -- Roman was the OT coach in Yankey's true freshman year, 2010 (season-ending injury early in the year). Drevno was the offensive line coach.

My conclusion -- Drevno is exaggerating his "influence" considerably. He didn't coach some of these guys at all, he wasn't the primary coach for others, and he overlapped with some of them for just one year. Drevno appears to have been the position coach for just 2 of the 7 players. No wonder Bloomgren was annoyed.

Re: Today in veiled Michigan-Stanford beefs - Treebound - 05-26-2016

As usual Terry, fantastic detail!  Thank you!

I'm curious how the players, the teams and the NFL feel about being included in this public brag/commercial?  Being in the business of sports, I know first hand that the lawyers are quick to fire off cease and desist letters.  Showing players in NFL uniforms is very rarely allowed.

Good for Bloomgren for highlighting the exaggeration.    Going from Stanford to USC to UM has perhaps caused Drevno to fudge a bit.  Sorry to see that, but it should bode well (for us) for any recruit that both Stanford and UofM are trying to sign.

A home and home with Michigan would be amazing. I was born in Michigan, still return often to see family, and the Wolverines were my team until I enrolled at Stanford. It still remains a life goal of mine to watch a game in the Big House. If that could be a STANFORD game -- I'd book the plane tickets the day the agreement was announced.

Re: Today in veiled Michigan-Stanford beefs - fullmetal - 05-26-2016

There was a speculative article online recently (SBNation or Bleacher Report, can't remember which) about what nonconference games would be most tanatalizing to Stanford fans.  Bama and Clemson made the cut...can't remember the third, but kal was thrown in there at the end for giggles.  I would love to see Texas (remember the 2000 or 2001 SI cover?), and now there's a compelling case for Michigan (and Ohio State, nod to Publius and the Buckeyes' strength).

McCaffrey could go on his own nose-punching tour: every single top-10 defensive coordinator out there.

I went to the 19-19 Stanford at Michigan game in 1975- my first year of law school at UM. I'll book my tickets the same day as you. Game day in Ann Arbor is a great football experience.

I think it was only last week that Shaw said he'd love to play at Clemson and match up against Dabo Swinney.

Wasn't that one of Cordova's best games?

I saw Oregon State play Michigan at the Big House last year -- my brother is an OSU alum -- and it was pretty amazing.  112,000 people, in one big bowl...with room for our legs, and reasonably close to the field.  There were about 6,000 OSU fans there, and I will tell you the U of Michigan fans were gracious in the extreme, almost solicitous to the visitors.  Of course, it's probably easier once you know you're going to kick the living s out of the visiting team.

The real hospitality test: how gracious would they be to fans of the other OSU?

Oklahoma State?  just fine.

The bumpkins from three hours south?  Well...not as good as Stanford fans treat ca.l fans, but not as bad as ca.l fans treat Stanford fans.
